Working for a purpose led organisation is super important for me when choosing a new role. We all want to be a part of something meaningful—it’s in our DNA as humans to find our purpose.
For 50 years, Bidvest Noonan has been a business that makes a difference in the world—and I’m so proud today to share our purpose statement which honours this 50-year legacy and the exceptional people who have made this business what it is. Our purpose is to proudly create safer and healthier communities today, for tomorrow. Bidvest Noonan is a business rooted in relationships—a business where our people play a vital role in the communities and towns where we live and work. There’s no better way to tell the story of our purpose than for you to meet the people who inspire us and serve as an example of what it means to proudly create safer and healthier communities. As we look to the future, it’s these relationships—with our people and customers—that will enable another 50 years of success and positive impact on the world.
Last week, we launched our purpose: to proudly create safer and healthier communities today, for tomorrow. As part of our ongoing Purpose Hero series, we are sharing stories of colleagues who truly embody this purpose and make a difference in our communities.
Today, we share Marilyn’s story. Marilyn, a member of our team at Dinnington Interchange, recounts an incident where, while carrying out her regular duties, she noticed a man in distress and immediately took action. What followed revealed the true power of quick thinking and compassion in the face of an emergency.

A lighthouse post today, for a number of reasons.
As a mark of sadness for all those affected by yesterday’s tragic incident in Baltimore.
To those lost, to those involved in the search and rescue, and to the crew and pilots of the Dali, and their families, my deepest and sincerest condolences - no one woke up expecting or wanting a ship to lose control and topple a bridge.
A lighthouse also to symbolise the things those of us not involved don’t know about what actually went wrong, or what could have, should have, or might have been tried or done to avoid the tragedy. To comment beyond acknowledging the devastation is, I think, to dismiss and pre-judge an already traumatised crew of human beings. People who despite impending danger, and in the face of potentially crippling fear, still managed to relay a ‘mayday’ call that may have helped save hundreds of lives.
And a lighthouse to remind us that there will be some of those involved for whom darkness is for a time, all they might now see.
They need our support, and not a cacophony of uninformed opinions, to help navigate their way through the start of a long, stormy night towards a safe harbour, and the embrace of friends and families.
If one chooses to post or comment at all, please make it a message of support.

Depression is, by nature, neither logical nor rational. It cannot be fully explained in these ways. Being "depressed for 30 days once" is not the same as someone battling with serious depression. While loss of loved ones who are suffering is painful and even confusing, those we lose are NOT quitting on themselves, their loved ones, or anyone else.
Perhaps one example to consider is a seagoing vessel in stormy seas. As long as the ship has not taken on water, does not lose power, etc.. they are likely capable of fighting the waves and making it through. If the same ship is hit by a wave and takes on water, loses power, etc., can it be expected to have the same success? Why would we expect this of people suffering from mental health issues? They need support, not judgement.
"High functioning depression is scary as hell because you're very capable of hiding emotions, feelings and thoughts, so no one knows you're not okay and even if you say something no one realizes the severity because you don't seem like someone who is mentally spiraling out of control."
