Today marks the kick off of #TransAwarenessWeek, a crucial time to raise awareness about trans inclusion and the challenges faced by trans and gender non-conforming people. This year's Transgender Awareness Week is taking on increased significance given recent developments in North America that have made the overall environment toxic, indeed downright dangerous for trans people. Anti-trans legislation has been tabled or implemented in three Canadian provinces as trans people, their families and allies fight back for the dignity and rights of all trans people, including trans minors. The recent sweeping defeat of former New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs by that province's Liberal Party under the leadership of Susan Holt shows that anti-trans policies and hate-based rhetoric isn't acceptable to most voters. And the recent election of Donald Trump to a second White House term has put an undeniable chill down the collective spines of all trans people and their allies. We're already seeing the far right culture-war politics of Trump's MAGA Republicans being imported north of the border, at times creating an atmosphere that can be extremely problematic for the trans community's safety and dignity. With this perilous backdrop, let's take time out of our busy schedules this week to raise awareness around trans issues and the very real challenges the community continues to confront in an increasingly precarious world.

***TRANS AWARENESS WEEK*** As time progresses, there are more and more famous trans humans. This visibility is so important for representation and understanding. Visibility allows trans folks to seem themselves represents, thus giving permission to be their authentic selves. It's also important for the cisgender folks to see the trans community and understand we are no different than they are. Today, we have many examples in pop culture representing the trans community. Pictured from top left; Christine Jorgensen, MJ Rodriguqez, Janelle Monet, Elliott Page, Laverne Cox, Chaz Bono, Jazz Jennings, Jonathan VanNess, and Sam Smith. Trans Folks Have Always Existed!

As today marks the first day of #TransAwarenessWeek, DTL would like to shine a light on the challenges faced by trans people today. There has been a troubling rise in anti-trans rhetoric across online spaces in recent years, and sadly, discrimination continues to impact trans lives in schools, workplaces, and communities. Despite years of advocacy, NSW still lacks strong legal protections for trans individuals, leaving many vulnerable to mistreatment, discrimination and exclusion. One step we can all take? Use correct pronouns and respect people’s identities—these simple acts can make a world of difference. Let’s support trans rights, amplify trans voices, and work toward a world that’s inclusive and safe for everyone. #TransRightsAreHumanRights #ProtectTransYouth
