Transgender Victoria (TGV), Victoria's leading body for transgender, gender diverse, and non-binary (TGD) communities, today announces its withdrawal from the 2025 Midsumma Pride March. This difficult decision comes after careful consideration of community feedback concerning police engagement. TGV has a long-standing commitment to advocating for improvements in police systems and practices. A recent community forum and survey conducted by TGV have confirmed a deep and pervasive discontent among TGD people regarding their interactions with and treatment by Victoria Police. We urge Victoria Police to commit to systemic reform pertinent to pride, protest, public safety and TGD human rights, including comprehensive cultural sensitivity education and steps towards nuanced and gender affirming data collection. In light of these concerns, TGV's Committee has approved a one-year suspension of participation in the Midsumma Pride March. Our future participation is contingent on Victoria Police accepting accountability for measurable change. TGV remains committed to supporting TGD and LGBTQIA+ communities at other Midsumma events such as Victoria's Pride and Carnival. TGV will also host an alternate event – a Trans Pride Picnic – in partnership with other community-led organisations. The date for this event will be announced soon. TGV believes that the safety and well-being of TGD communities must be urgently prioritised - during Midsumma and beyond. TGV is open to dialogue and collaboration to this end. Meta's Policy Changes: A Green Light for Trans Hate? Content warning: some transphobic material is quoted below. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, recently announced changes to its content moderation policies that have sent shockwaves through LGBTQIA+ communities. These changes, which loosen restrictions on hate speech targeting marginalised groups, raise serious concerns about the safety and well-being of TGD people online. As Communications Lead for Transgender Victoria - an organisation that is run for, by and with TGD people - I have experienced firsthand the harmful impact of trolling and hate speech. Our social media pages are frequently targeted by those seeking to cause harm and spread misinformation about our identities. Meta's policy changes threaten to exacerbate this problem, creating an environment where transphobia and other forms of hate speech are allowed to flourish. Of particular concern is Meta explicitly permitting "allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation." This revolting and dangerous rhetoric perpetuates harmful stereotypes and undermines the progress made in recognising the validity, diversity and beauty of TGD identities. Let me be clear: Trans people have always existed and will continue to exist, regardless of the hateful rhetoric directed at us. We are not a mental illness. We are not abnormal. We are simply people who deserve to live our lives free from discrimination and violence. Meta's policy changes are a step backward in the fight for equality. They send a message that hate speech is acceptable, and that the safety and well-being of marginalised communities are not a priority. I urge Meta to reconsider these harmful policy changes and prioritise the safety of all its users. I urge our community and allies to remain vigilant and report any instances of hate speech encountered on Meta's platforms. And most importantly, I urge you to join us in building a stronger, more resilient community. In the meantime, Transgender Victoria will continue to provide vital support and advocacy for TGD communities. In a digital landscape where algorithms can silence marginalised voices, it's more important than ever to cultivate spaces where our community can connect and thrive. Our weekly newsletter, The Dispatch, is delivered straight to your inbox. Join over 2,000 subscribers and get the latest from Transgender Victoria. Please also consider making a donation to Transgender Victoria. We offer direct peer support services for TGD people year-round, providing a safe space for connection and community, helping to minimise the impact of transphobia. We will continue to fight for a world where all trans people are welcomed, valued, and celebrated. Yours in solidarity, Hank Paul (they/them) Communications and Fundraising Lead Transgender Victoria
