🌿 New Publication Alert: Bioconversion and Performance of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) in Converting Organic Poultry Waste 🌿 in Waste and Biomass Valorization journal. I am excited to share our recent study, "Bioconversion and Performance of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) in Converting Organic Poultry Waste Materials into High-Value Products and Fertilizers," published in Waste and Biomass Valorization. Co-authored with Niranjan B. H, Mahesh S. Yandigeri, Diksha Purushottam Gourkhede, Nadeem Fairoze, Elangovan A. V, and S. B. N Rao, this research explores an innovative approach to managing poultry waste using Black Soldier Fly larvae (BSFL). Key Findings: Effective Waste Reduction: The study demonstrated a substantial material reduction of 52.36% and a high bio-conversion efficiency of 31.84% with a lower feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 1.25. High-Value Byproducts: The process produced pre-pupae biomass with elevated protein content and generated residues with significant manure value and a C/N ratio of 37.5. Microbial Safety: The research also highlighted the clearance of Salmonella load in the residue, ensuring microbial safety. Sustainable Recycling: Poultry waste was converted into commercially valuable products within just 24 days, showcasing a practical and efficient waste management solution. This study provides a promising pathway for transforming poultry waste into valuable resources while promoting sustainability. 🍀 At the start of this new year, Sia Partners is pleased to share with you its 7th European biomethane benchmark. Like every year, we offer you a quantitative analysis of biomethane production plants in Europe, as well as a comprehensive overview of industry trends and regulatory developments. 📢 Here are a few highlights: 1. By the end of 2022, over 1200 biomethane plants were officially registered in the main European biomethane-producing countries, contributing 37 TWh of biomethane to the grid. 2. Agricultural residues including manure, crop residues and intermediate crops, amount to 43% of the feedstocks used compared to 39% in 2021, reflecting a shift towards more sustainable feedstocks. 3. Biogas upgrading is experiencing a surge, with biogas upgrading capacity going up by 30% in three years with a significant contribution from dynamic countries such as France. 4. Biomethane makes up less than 1% of Europe's gas consumption, while Europe is currently using 4% of its anaerobic digestion potential, suggesting that the sector still holds huge potential to reach the 2030 target of 35 bcm. 5. Agricultural biomass shows promise in reducing chemical fertilizer use Agricultural biomass residues and food industry byproducts are emerging as viable alternatives to reduce chemical fertilizer usage, paving the way for more sustainable farming practices. This groundbreaking development took center stage at the EIMA International trade show in Bologna, Italy. "Overcoming current barriers to biofertilizer development is crucial," stated Italian partners of the European DELISOIL Project during the meeting. They emphasized the importance of establishing a supply chain that effectively utilizes waste products and returns nutrients to the soil. This European Commission-funded initiative aims to develop solutions for processing and recycling food industry secondary streams to produce high-quality, safe recycled fertilizers. The project also supports the EU's "Soil Deal for Europe" mission and "Farm to Fork" strategy for sustainable agriculture. This cutting-edge sustainable technology enables nutrient release through the complete biodegradation of mulch materials. Initial trials have shown promising results, with biodegradation completed in less than four months and increasing nitrate and phosphorus levels by 60%, significantly reducing the need for chemical fertilizer applications. The U.S. #biofuel market is booming, making #canola cultivation increasingly attractive to farmers! According to @BiofuelsInternational, a record-high area of over 1 million hectares is projected to be planted with canola in the 2024-25 season, marking a 13% increase from the previous year. The @USDA predicts a record harvest of 2.1 million tonnes, with states like North Dakota, Montana and Washington expanding their cultivation areas to new heights. Plant-Based Protein, Biofuels & Deforestation of the Amazon - As many organization in the EU are publishing their discontent with delaying the #EUDR, maybe it's time to look at the lack of clarity and most importantly - Is this just a reporting exercise? A few things are clear from this article: 1) Soybean is an economic success for Brazil but as you will see on the map, it's (not just beef) one of the main cause of deforestation. Increasing plant based protein intake will most likely lead to more deforestation (a net negative) 2) Growing Soybean for biofuels is also a net negative solution meaning that the energy required to grow soybean far exceeds the benefit of biofuel it produces. Soybean requires significant energy to produce, have its own environmental impacts, and could divert soybeans from the nation’s food supply. https://lnkd.in/eUsgdebw 3) Strangely enough "soybean" wasn't included in the #EUDR reporting requirements. This bacterium lives on the Andean Altiplano, or high-altitude plateau, of the great mountain range straddling Bolivia and a number of other South American countries. To protect itself from the intense sunlight and high salt concentration of its environment, it produces a type of polymer (a base component of many living organisms), which the scientists believe can be at the base of a number of high value-added biorefinery applications. It is this "exopolysaccharide" polymer that can become use products down the line.
