What was your worst summer job? I always wanted to be the cool summer camp counselor (Bill Murray in Meatballs) but settled for working alone in a field at a Christmas tree farm. I wore shin pads so my machete wouldn't cut me and heavy boots so if I stepped on a snake it couldn't bite me. There was zero cool in a field and I hope my kids learn the same lessons. 1. Stay in school. Sitting in class learning with your friends is a privilege. 2. Work is not always fun. Bosses are not always fair. 3. 1 HR in a field to buy a Big Mac is not a wise trade. Needs Vs. Wants. 4. The work ethic you develop now will last a lifetime. 5. Offer to do more. Those are the kids who get to 'supervise' next year. If you think snake boots won't help you get into that College, or land that Internship you're wrong. Recruiters like me want to see stability, work ethic, progression, and ambition. Get your kids off the couch, out of the house, and earning valuable experience. Snake boots come in all sizes. Definitely working at a Dairy Queen during the summer after my freshman year in college. There were women working there for years that only made 5 cents more an hour than me (which would’ve been five cents more than minimum wage). It definitely motivated me to work even harder when I returned to school in the Fall.
Dishwasher at an Italian restaurant definitely came with some benefits (free food) but also some "unique" responsibilities beyond washing dishes. If you were on the early shift, you got to start your day cleaning the bathrooms. Everyone had to sign up for one Sunday afternoon shift per month which meant you started the day sweeping the entire parking lot. Apparently, I did a good job as they promoted me to "salad prep" at the end of the Summer to try and keep me but I could not get back to school fast enough. Used to think about those Sunday afternoons sweeping the parking lot when school seemed hard
Great post Travis. Mine was night time petrol pump attendant on Friday and Saturday nights, age 13.5-17 (child labor wasn't really a thing in South Africa)... amazing the life lessons you get on a gas station forecourt. Always wash the windscreen... tips increase exponentially.
commission only selling cuddly toys out of a bag Grafton Street Dublin, best training in sales I ever got. :)
Washing windshields and pumping gas 7-3. Channeled my inner Hank Hill filling propane tanks 3-11. To quote Dick Proenneke - "It was hard work, but I enjoyed it."
Nice to meet you Travis - my worst university job was housecleaning after fires (for a mate who owned a cleaning company). We did about six jobs where the owner had died in the fire, almost always from untended cigarettes in bed or on a couch. Not for the squeamish, including me!
Love the post! I was fortunate enough to get that camp counselor gig (more a la Babysitters Club than Bill Murray in Meatballs). I was a high schooler living the dream - it was on a college campus, we were in the dorms and I was with my friends. Best summers ever!
Great piece Travis O'Rourke! I was Lucky enough to spend my summers working at my local YMCA during the opening shift and evenings and it was always a privilege to connect with my community year after year!

5moHanging off the side of a ship’s hull on a nylon rope about 87 years old sitting on a single 6” x 12” wooden “seat” about 50 meters above the surface of Halifax harbor painting the same hull with an extended reach paint roller. I know the rope was 87 years old because the guy that gave it to me said it was 83 years old and I did the job for four summers. Good pay at the time but not so much of that fancy “workplace safety” that seems to be all the rage now.
