We had an enriching time at IMO-HSG | Institut für Mobilität @ Universität St.Gallen (HSG), discussing the transformative journey of mobility: What does the mobility transition require? What does it even mean? Is it just about switching from combustion engines to electric vehicles, or is it something far beyond that? And what role will the car play in this "new mobility" future? My conclusion from this vibrant discussion is that it is not just an "engine shift" but a comprehensive mobility transition. In my opinion, the car will continue to be a crucial pillar in this future construct. The question will be whether, in the future, we will own a car or purchase mobility. I foresee a mixed future, and the magic word for me is "integration," combining on-demand and mass mobility, sharing and owning models. Recently, I read the book "Superkraft Mensch" by Dr. Ferri Abolhassan, and one of my key takeaways was that future services will not only be more customer-specific but also significantly enhanced by situational components. The same applies to mobility. However, what the discussions also highlighted for me is that we often view mobility too rationally. Mobility is not just about getting from A to B. It is also about one's personal situation, safe space, status, comfort, fun, and joy, and therefore primarily about emotions. This component should not be underestimated. What is your opinion on the mobility transition? What role will the car play in "New Mobility"? #CASSMM24 #CASSMM #SmartMobility #SmartCities #SmartData

Time flies. This is a picture that the aerosol team took. In this group is a "baby" Ady Suwardi. I first got to know him just before the pandemic. He is a hardworking chap and A*STAR scholar but never quite made the coveted list of "rising stars" He is a thermoelectric scientist by training. Being extremely passionate about his science and published rather prolifically on the topic. During COVID, I asked him to join the aerosol team to work on aerosol studies. He agreed without any hesitation. During this time, he impressed me with his can-do attitude, his ability to design experiments independently and more importantly, to think out of the box when needed. Today with my trusted team of Ivan Tan and Davy Cheong, we went places to understand how did aerosols spread in public places. I enjoyed those times, and enjoyed my times interacting with Ady. When the pandemic somewhat came down, I let him test out his ideas as an Emerging Group Leader in IMRE. He has the publications to show for his work and by today has worked up to a rather healthy H-Index of 32 with many publications in a focused field of thermoelectrics. As luck will have it, he had patchy luck with grants. Until today, I am sure it is not lack of quality but perhaps wrong proposal at the wrong time. As time passed by, these built up and I sensed maybe a certain frustration even though I had continued to support him. I always believed that he just needed time. And he will deliver. Yet, from his grant success rate, no one else believed in him. Fast forward, to a recent month, when he told me sheepishly, that he found a job. I looked at him and I think I did not show too much of an expression. I wanted to say "Leave! Carpe diem!" I couldn't for I was aware of my own role. I could not hold onto him. Not in terms of renumeration, not in terms of opportunity. The only things he probably was holding onto was the friendship that he built in IMRE all these years. But yet, this very same organization could become the hindrance to his career if he had continued to stay. Our environment became difficult for him to continue his research. It would be too frustrating. I very much rather that he takes the opportunity now and carves a name for himself on the international scene. He can be an important network point for us in the future. Yet I am also sad that as we bring in more talents, we are also losing the very good young ones trained internally who could make a difference in the future. Congratulations to your new career in Hong Kong! I wish you nothing but the best. I have no doubt that you will become the success that you should be. I am thankful and grateful to your contributions to IMRE and sad to see you go. Goodbye Ady. This is not really farewell but a temporary parting. As scientists, we definitely will meet again. Maybe one day both you and I can gather, meet up and think back to the happier times in IMRE while basking in your success in your new place.
