PCRL coordinates the AEOLUS Project. AEOLUS, leveraging on the experience of its partners on novel photonic components (e.g. broadband thermal emitter, graphene photodetector), will demonstrate in an operational environment (TRL 7) an affordable, miniaturised, multi-gas (10 – 15 gases) sensor based on highly integrated photonic chips in the mid-IR (3 μm – 10 μm). AEOLUS sensors will be cloud connected, deployed in an existing IoT testbed, while the plethora of data acquired will be used to develop deep learning algorithms for chemometric analysis. AEOLUS sensing system will demonstrate the calculation and accurate prediction of indoor and outdoor air quality, greenhouse gases concentration, and toxic gas leakages detection. The sensing system will provide many functionalities for the end-user such as real-time alerts, notifications, visualized reports and overlays while it will allow taking automatic actions where they are needed. AEOLUS will also demonstrate how user engagement can be promoted through its system, employing gamification concepts and incentivise the end users. AEOLUS targets for a cheap portable sensor, tested for its interoperability, with many functionalities and quality of life services, targeting a very wide range of applications to ensure its widespread deployment. The proliferation of the AEOLUS sensor in the community acts in an exponential manner (leveraging Big Data techniques and Deep Learning algorithms), further enhancing the system’s accuracy and speed. AEOLUS sensing system is completely in line with its industrial partners’ roadmaps and exploitation plans and it is foreseen to have a product in the market 0-2 years from the end of the project. Ultimately, the acquired data and analysis will be made available to policy-makers and stakeholders, so that AEOLUS has a far-reaching impact in EU’s citizens life.

Pleased to announce that BROMEDIR project successfully joined ECREAM_HORIZON, the European Cluster of Research projects for Environmental and Agri-food Monitoring. The network facilitates the sharing of knowledge between mainly photonics-based research projects funded under various EU Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe research and innovation programme and further coordinates joint communication and dissemination activities. Most of the projects are also part of the Photonics21 Public Private Partnership. 🌟 Happy DAY OF PHOTONICS! 🌟 Today, we celebrate the remarkable strides photonics has made in recent years. From advances in telecommunications and quantum technologies to breakthroughs in healthcare, the progress we've witnessed wouldn't have been possible without the dedicated collaboration of scientists, engineers, and research institutions across the globe. 📡🔬 At the PCRL - Photonics Communications Research Laboratory, we are proud to contribute to this evolution through numerous research projects run by strong consortia. Our collective achievements exemplify how teamwork can drive innovation forward. A small taste of this is shown in this short video of the recent demo of the Int5Gent Project, which is now nearing completion. This project, coordinated by PCRL, brought together 16 partners from across Europe to push the boundaries of photonics in next-generation intelligent communication systems. At the Project's demo, we showcased the exciting progress made in 5G! 🎥✨ 📈 Some examples of the current PCRL’s Contributions to Photonics Progress: 1️⃣ Telecommunications: With the TERA6G Project, which PCRL coordinates, we are helping drive the development of ultra-high-speed communications, setting the stage for the next-generation 6G networks. 2️⃣ Healthcare: Through the PHOREVER Project, we are advancing photonic technologies that revolutionize medical diagnostics and imaging, making healthcare more precise and effective. 3️⃣ Quantum Technologies: In the LaiQa Project, PCRL is contributing to cutting-edge developments in quantum cryptography, ensuring the security of tomorrow’s communication networks, including satellites and critical infrastructures. 💡 The global photonics market is expected to exceed $1 trillion by 2030, and with each advancement, we are uncovering new possibilities in telecommunications, healthcare, security, and beyond.
