After being certified a bachelor's degree, the question which comes next to most graduands " What will I do next?". Few choose the road less travelled of self employment, some get employment within few weeks to months after graduation and a significant number wait to be recruited after applying for different job posts. Now let's talk about this other part of job searching, called the "Internship" programme. After having a discussion with my colleague about the guarantee of getting paid in an internship programme, according to my knowledge, internship programme is more of a training thing. To which graduands get practical knowledge and even get to connect with experts in their field. Thus, even if an intern is not paid he/she can not complain. Plus, I have been hearing few good experiences from doing an internship programme in Tanzania especially from LinkedIn. However, my colleague argued because they tend to do some work it is a guarantee for an intern to get paid atleast TZS 300,000. What's your experience with an internship programme? Are paid internship common in Tanzania to which fresh graduates expect to get some cash?

Let's discuss a scenario: A recent fresh graduate has landed an internship related to her/his degree to gain hands-on experience. Meanwhile, s/he has also been accepted for a full-time honours program at a South African university. If s/he can't pursue both paths and must choose one, which one would you recommend s/he takes and why? Given our country's high unemployment rate, I lean towards suggesting the internship. Securing a job in South Africa can be challenging, and having some experience could be invaluable. Since many jobs require prior experience, an internship could provide her/him with a valuable head start in her/his career. S/he could consider returning to school or balancing both commitments the following year. What are your thoughts? #Hr #Shiluvah #PeopleManagement #CareerAdvice #ProfessionalDevelopment

Intern to Intern, let’s talk. Being an intern is often seen as “just another stepping stone,” something small or insignificant compared to bigger roles in the workplace. Some people think it’s “beneath” them because they’ve graduated, gained experience, or worked in higher roles before. But here’s the truth: Internships are foundational. • They are not “small.” They are the start of something significant, especially if you are transitioning into a new field or industry. • Internships give you a unique opportunity to learn, unlearn, and relearn in a structured environment. • They teach you humility, teamwork, and adaptability; traits that matter at every level of your career. • And let’s not forget, the relationships you build during this period can open doors you didn’t know existed. ***************************************** But here’s something equally important: the organization you choose to intern with matters. Ensure that the company values your well-being, fosters a good work culture, and treats you as more than just “an intern.” Look for organizations that see your worth, invest in your growth, and help you take a step higher. Sadly, in Nigeria, interns are sometimes trivialized, but you deserve a space where your contributions are valued and your growth is a priority. I’ve been privileged to intern with Junior Achievement Nigeria, and it’s been an incredible journey. People are usually surprised to hear that I am “just an intern” because of the way I work and get treated. This is what every intern deserves: a supportive environment that equips you to thrive and prepares you for what’s next. So, intern to intern: Don’t let anyone make you feel like that role is less than. It’s a platform for growth, a place to plant seeds for your future, and a chance to make your mark in ways that matter. Every great journey starts somewhere, and this could be your beginning. #InternToIntern #Internship #GrowthMindset #CareerTransitions #PersonalDevelopment
