Hamamatsu Kohoku Senior High School Multipurpose Gymnasium Design:Takeshita Architects and Associates Location:Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Pref. Shelter's involvement:Material supply See more photos from the link below. https://lnkd.in/dn4p2RkT #Shelter #design #architecture #wood #timber #structural #construction #shizuoka #school This is a plan for a multi-purpose gymnasium at a newly established high school formed from the merger of three prefectural schools. Rather than constructing the large space with traditional large cross-sections, the design features a light, arch-shaped structure that ensures the necessary height for sporting activities. The challenge was to use locally sourced cedar from the prefecture to manage the large span and thrust forces generated by the roof. The solution involved a wooden arch structure with a high rise to transmit axial forces vertically, combined with steel to bear horizontal forces. This hybrid structure of wood and steel allows for the arch beams to be half the size normally required. The detailed wooden construction creates an ideal environment for the new school's sports facilities.

🎖️My latest Certification “Urban Planning and Sustainable Infrastructure” from Chulalongkorn University - Innovation Engineering for Sustainability #IES #Chula #Sustainability The principles of urban planning design and housing development consider the living standard of people toward efficiency and sustainability. The development of quality housing applies the concept of tropical architecture in combination with state-of-the-art structural engineering technology and building constructions as well as other engineering systems, as determined appropriate. This, but not limited to, includes the prefabricating construction technology under the modular system in architecture and engineering designs, and hence ensures good standard and precision of building materials. The urban planning and housing design concepts ensure the minimization of household energy consumption and material wastes during the construction and hence are friendly to the environment. This will create sustainable communities of the nation.

Research is a manifestation of one’s idealism. My colleagues, Elvina Wijaya and Budi Cahyadi Wijaya, and I believe that there is much wisdom we can gain from the past and apply, with adaptation, to the present. Rooted in the past, we aim to explore the opportunity of applying passive design in modern architecture based on the traditional houses of the Banjar people in Kalimantan. This paper focuses on three types of Banjar houses: the Bubungan Tinggi house, the Palimbangan house, and the Lanting house. We study the form and proportion of the structures and compare their passive cooling performance through CFD simulation. We are grateful that our paper has been accepted at The International Symposium and Workshop on Sustainable Buildings, Cities, and Communities (SBCC) 2024, and was recently published. You can check our paper here. https://lnkd.in/ga2Hf278 Keep learning from the past, and keep moving forward.

Passive houses based on self-made interlocking clay bricks promote affordability and offer a forward-thinking solution that reduces the global CO2 emission footprint of housing. Passive design strategies such as wide roof overhangs, minimized west-facing walls, airflow cooled roofs, heart reflecting layers, and cooling towers play a pivotal role. These features maximize natural ventilation and shade, fostering comfortable indoor temperatures during the day and retaining warmth at night, especially in tropical regions. This approach not only eliminates the need for air conditioning but also alleviates the financial burden on those without access to sufficient resources. Through intelligent design and sustainable practices, passive houses are not just homes — they are a proactive blueprint for a healthier planet.

Mount Penanggungan: Where Ancient Javanese Architecture Meets Sacred Geography 🗻 Fascinating discoveries on Mount Penanggungan in East Java reveal how ancient Javanese civilization (10th-15th centuries CE) masterfully integrated architecture, spirituality, and environmental adaptation. Rising 1,653 meters, this volcanic mountain's unique formation - a central peak surrounded by eight smaller peaks - mirrored Mount Meru in Hindu-Buddhist cosmology. Three key findings showcase its significance: 1. Strategic religious domains (sima) established by kings demonstrated sophisticated political-religious governance 2. Innovative architectural solutions like terraced sanctuaries (punden berundak) and water temples showcased remarkable environmental adaptation 3. Integration of Hindu-Buddhist and indigenous elements created a unique cultural landscape The mountain's sacred sites offer valuable insights for modern sustainable architecture and cultural heritage preservation, reminding us how ancient societies achieved harmony between built environment and nature. #JavaneseHeritage #ArchaeologicalDiscovery #SustainableArchitecture #CulturalHeritage #Indonesia Interested in reading more? The Hilti Village Prototype is under construction in Nasugbu, Batangas, Philippines. The prototype house is a part of an ongoing collaboration with BASE, an initiative of the Hilti Foundation that provides alternative building technologies to enable a network of partners to build quality socialized homes. DDU is collaborating with Base Bahay Foundation, Inc. to update its prototypical village house to improve its capacity to create collective communities at the scale of the settlement through the design of the unitary house. Working with the constraints of the innovative Cement-Bamboo Frame Technology, a simple design change is made to tweak the parallel end walls of the house, which creates circular urban forms at the scale of the settlement. These urban forms are conducive to enabling collective community courtyards, gardens, play spaces, and other common programs. Small yards between pairs of houses facing the larger collective spaces allow for ranges of intimacy and collectivity.
