In his career, Roger Federer won 80% of all the matches he played, but only 54% of individual points. To me, this is such a great illustration of why strategy matters - knowing which points, which plays to focus on in order to win. On a points basis, Federer was only 4% better than the average of his competitors - but he made that 4% count. All strategy is about making decisions about where to play, and how to 'win' (based on a clear view of what 'winning' looks like for your organisation). How clear is your organisation's strategy? What struck me most was his profound reflection on dealing with losses. Federer shared, “ In tennis, perfection is impossible... In the 1,526 singles matches I played in my career, I won almost 80% of those matches... Now, I have a question for all of you... what percentage of the POINTS do you think I won in those matches? Only 54%. In other words, even top-ranked tennis players win barely more than half of the points they play. When you lose every second point, on average, you learn not to dwell on every shot. When you’re playing a point, it is the most important thing in the world. But when it’s behind you, it’s behind you... This mindset is really crucial, because it frees you to fully commit to the next point… and the next one after that… with intensity, clarity and focus.” This resonates deeply in the professional world.
