Have you considered getting your yard summer storm ready? "This time of year, I often have conversations with customers about getting their trees “ready for hurricane season.” Summer in Richmond is notorious for random thunderstorms and other intense weather events, so here at Truetimber, we believe that having an arborist inspect your property is paramount-before these storms roll through. The primary reason for pre-hurricane tree inspections is to assess structural integrity. Trees that appear healthy on the outside may have internal decay or weak spots that compromise their ability to withstand strong winds. Having an arborist assess a tree’s integrity is a great first step in maintaining your property and protecting against sudden, unexpected damage. The last thing any homeowner wants is a failing tree causing damage to person or property. Yesterday, the day after a tropical storm passed through, I spent time prospecting and speaking with new clients. During our conversations, I discovered that some of them did not have a current hurricane plan with their landscaping service. We cannot stress the importance of this enough! Thankfully, the storm did not hit North Florida too hard. However, to be prepared for future storms, especially if they are worse, follow these steps: 1. Make a disaster plan and pre-authorize storm clean-up. 2. Trim your trees. 3. Address drainage issues. 4. Stake young trees and plants. https://lnkd.in/eZE5UVNe

Pruning trees before a hurricane is crucial for several reasons: Reduced Wind Resistance: Trimming branches reduces the tree's wind resistance, making it less likely to topple over or suffer significant damage during high winds. Prevents Weaknesses: Pruning removes dead, diseased, or weak branches that are more susceptible to breaking off in strong winds. This helps maintain the tree's overall structural integrity. Protects Property and People: By removing overhanging branches or limbs that could potentially fall and cause damage to property or injure people during a storm, pruning helps enhance safety for both property and individuals. Prevents Damage to Other Trees: Pruning helps prevent branches from one tree from damaging adjacent trees during high winds, reducing the risk of collateral damage. Promotes Healthy Growth: Proper pruning encourages healthy growth by directing the tree's energy to the development of strong, well-spaced branches. Easier Cleanup: Pruning can also make post-hurricane cleanup easier by reducing the amount of debris that needs to be cleared away. Overall, pruning trees before a hurricane is an essential precautionary measure to minimize the risk of damage and promote the long-term health and safety of the trees and surrounding property. For those living or wanting to sell products like metal roofs in HOA's, this article may be helpful: "DeSantis signs law that forces Florida HOAs to allow residents to install storm-hardening improvements." With hurricane season beginning in just a few days and an "above normal" season predicted, it is a good time to start preparing. It may be a good idea to contact your HOA to see where they stand on this. "However, there are limitations — HOAs have to set specifications for hurricane protection products, and can regulate the style and color of a storm-hardening product."

🌀 With Hurricane Season lasting 6 months out of the year, it’s important to consider the resilience of our green friends when planning your project’s landscape design. 🌿 Here's a quick guide on trees that weather the storm and those that struggle: 🌴 HURRICANE HEROES: + Palm Trees: Very well-suited to withstand hurricane winds of up to 145 miles per hour due to their strength, flexibility, and ability to shed leaves. + Live Oaks: With their robust root systems, these giants stand strong against powerful winds. + Bald Cypress: Known for their ability to thrive in wet conditions, these trees are resilient to both wind and flooding. + Crape Myrtles: Their flexible branches help them bend rather than break during high winds. + Southern Magnolias: Despite their large leaves, they can withstand strong winds due to their sturdy branches. 🛑 HURRICANE HAZARDS: - Willows: Their shallow roots make them susceptible to being uprooted during storms. - Poplars: Fast-growing but weak-wooded, these trees often suffer extensive damage in hurricanes. - Pines: While some varieties are more resilient, many pine species have shallow roots and are prone to toppling in high winds. - Bradford Pear: Their branch structure is prone to splitting, making them vulnerable during storms. Remember, proper tree maintenance and strategic planting can help mitigate risk during hurricane season. We at IDG can provide your projects with beautiful landscapes that will weather the storm. . . #IDG #InnovationsDesignGroup #HurricaneSeason #LandscapeDesign #LandscapeArchitecture
