Having not too long ago married into a family rooted in Alabama and Tennessee, I have become accustomed to having Milo’s #tea at every family occasion (and I appreciate that they buy jugs of the unsweet version in addition to the sweet they all love). So I particularly enjoyed the lunchtime speaker at #BevTech today, Tricia Wallwork, CEO of Milo's Tea Company, Inc., who talked about what drives the company forward. It was never really the intent for Milo’s to be a #beverage company. Through the generations, this family-owned company has been driven by economic prosperity not only for themselves but also for the communities that they’re part of. It began with Tricia’s grandfather, Milo, who—after returning home from World War II, where he was an army cook—opened a restaurant selling burgers and fries in Birmingham, Ala. Tricia’s parents started franchising the restaurant in the 1980s. When her dad was looking to retire and sell the restaurants, the buyer didn’t want the tea, so he kept that. Along the way, Wallwork traded in her high heels for some steel-toed boots, dropping her law career to take over the family business. Manufacturing space grew from about 3 acres to over 100 in 2020 at a new greenfield facility in Tulsa, Okla., then expanded further to a brownfield dairy facility to make #lemonade, and now is building another facility in Spartanburg, S.C. Today, Milo’s is in all 50 states, at more than 50,000 retail locations across the country—doing just as well in Whole Foods as it does in Walmart. Regardless of how it grows, it’s still very much about communities, according to Wallwork, who talks about building institutions that make a positive impact in the world. “Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a Pollyanna thing. We are a culture of very high accountability, high results, and high trust,” Wallwork says. “But we know that we are also there to help one another—whether that’s our external partners, our associates, or anyone that is in our ecosystem.” ISBT - International Society of Beverage Technologists ProFood World

Do you know where #barcodes originate from? Inventor Joe Woodland first drew a barcode in the sand on Miami Beach in 1949, decades before technology could bring his vision to life. On 3 April 1973, Woodland's vision became a reality when industry leaders agreed on a common business practice - the barcode. A year later, on 26 June 1974, a pack of Wrigley’s chewing gum became the first product in the world to be scanned at a till in an Ohio supermarket. In 1982, on 7 May, eight years later, GS1 South Africa opened its doors, originally known as the South African Numbering Association. Yesterday, on 26 June 2024, we celebrated the #50th Anniversary of the #first #barcode #scan in that Ohio supermarket. As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first barcode scan, let’s reflect on the journey of innovation that began with Joe Woodland’s vision in 1949. The barcode has revolutionised how we conduct business, making processes more efficient and reliable. To honour this milestone, we encourage everyone to think about how innovation and technology have impacted our industry and consider how we can continue to drive progress in the future. Most small businesses have never heard of Zapier, but this video showcases how it can be used to connect your systems (in this case Xero, Bowimi and Gmail) to automate previously tedious processes.

🌟 Reflecting on 2024 for Avorium 🌟 A bit overdue, but we are proud to reflect on a year filled with significant milestones, valued partnerships, and community engagement. Here are some of the key highlights from our journey this year: This year saw the opening of our new shop in the Leeds Corn Exchange, an exciting step in growing our presence and connecting with new customers. At the start of 2024, we partnered with York Drinks | York Gin | York Distillery, and since then, have personalised over 300 Gin Bottles for their customers. We even hosted our first ever Plant Pot Painting Event in collaboration with York Girlies, introducing a whole new concept of events to the Avorium space. Partnerships with local businesses, including New Holgate, Impossible Bar, Visit York, and York Venues, have been key in strengthening ties within the community. A rather daunting but exciting Christmas period of trading at 4 Christmas Markets allowed us to showcase Avorium to new cities - we learnt a lot from this!! We were thrilled to participate in our first-ever pop-up at John Lewis Leeds, supported by IND!E, marking an exciting milestone in our retail journey. This year’s accomplishments are a testament to the dedication of our team, the trust of our customers, and the invaluable support of our community. We are excited to embrace the opportunities 2025 will bring and look forward to continuing our journey of growth and learning from the things that maybe didn't go so well last year!
