All concerned parents, struggling to limit your child's mobile game time,📱Curious about the origins of video games? Here is the science trivia that will not only tell you who but why? Physicist William Higinbotham crafted the first known video game - a simple tennis game like the 1970s Pong. Debuted at Brookhaven National Laboratory, this innovative creation became an instant hit! In a magazine interview on asking why he created the game, he quoted “ I thought I could better capture visitors’ interest by creating an interactive demonstration and it would liven up the place to have a game that people could play, and which would convey the message that our scientific endeavors have relevance for society.” If he knew the impact it would have on future gaming and problems associated with it, probably he would have thought twice!!!🤔🤔 Let's ponder the history, innovation, and impact of the gaming industry as we approach National Video Game Day today, the 8th July. #videogames #history #innovation #gamingindustry #mobilegameaddiction #problematicmobileusage

On this #WayBackWednesday, we deep dive hands-first into our next 8-Bit History lesson with the Nintendo Game Boy! The Game Boy, the (amazing) 8-bit, hand-held gaming device, was released in stages throughout the world through 1989 and 1990. It ran games from cartridges, offered a monochromatic display and battery life that extended beyond 10 (amazing) hours of gameplay. Players spent hours playing one of its first games released for the platform… Tetris. But, as we know, where there are games, there is a market for cheating. And, the Game Boy platform was no different. One of the first platforms for “enhancing” play by giving players the chance to set infinite lives or power up continuously was Datel’s “Action Replay”. ( https://lnkd.in/dAWjWhat ) The Action Replay device connected to the cartridge bay of the Game Boy and then the game cartridge connected on top. Early versions of the Action Replay allowed players to pause the game and manually set memory address values. To see the Action Replay in action, check out: ( https://lnkd.in/d2hZncpr ). As Action Replay and similar devices became more mature, they evolved to perform like machine code debuggers and assemblers. Users were able to bypass in-game cheating and game-authenticity checks. Development of game cheats has become more complex as games have become more complex. But, at the same time, it has become more lucrative as gaming tournaments have offered larger prizes. In his 2020 BSides Munich talk, Philipp Schmied shared insights on the state of game hacking today – both the why and the how ( https://lnkd.in/dqNpvqXr ). #BSidesMunich2024 BSidesMunich 8-Bit :: Forged by HI

https://lnkd.in/eRXk5MGg It might be a flawed video because it just kinda exposes how much of a PlayStation fan this person is, but this just appeared in my YT feed, and I was just so excited discovering someone who thinks the way I have been thinking for years! 😃❤️🎮 From the outset, you could argue that as gamers grew more mature, the games industry (largely outside Japan) would invest in more big-budget, largely 18-rated titles (like how PlayStation's Naughty Dog went from Crash Bandicoot to The Last of Us!), and I remember seeing all this happen at age 12-13 seeing both Xbox and PlayStation make this ongoing shift, whilst Nintendo seems to be the only gaming brand that cares a lot about all-ages adventures (as well as family multiplayer experiences)! 🙂❤️ The thing is, though, it shouldn't have to be like this, where only one major brand is the trusted, go-to place for all-ages games - there are exciting things you can do that can have a much bigger impact on the general public when you at least make it appropriate for kids, than make something just for adults - e.g. the excitement of exploring nature, and the need to preserve the planet! 🙂❤️🏞🌍 Whereas most AAA 18-rated titles seem to go along with themes like war, corruption and the the human condition, whether it's fantasy, sci-fi or historical! 🗡👨🚀🪖 Even as a teen, I continued to lean more towards all-ages games (rated 3 and 7) than those rated 12, 15 and 18, because companies like Nintendo never talked down to their audiences! 🙂❤️ It could be because I've been a lifelong Disney fan, and since animation is expected to be SO expensive to make, it (to me) makes more financial sense to make something that's appropriate for all ages than just for teens/adults (even with the popularity of adult anime)! But it could be also because of the state of the news today, that I'm tired of being regularly exposed to stories to do with wars, politics, corruption, criminal networks, etc.! 🙁📺📰 Kids deserve to experience single-player story and dialogue-driven adventures (e.g. Monkey Island and other point-and-click games! 🖱) just like the amount of choice adult gamers have today! Kids shouldn't just be exposed to today's BIG online brand-integrated worlds like Fortnite and Roblox, nor should it be just online multiplayer competitive experiences like Among Us, FIFA and Super Smash Bros! 🙂🎮⚽️💥 If there is a huge adult audience today for all-ages animation (Disney, DreamWorks, Ghibli, etc.), than there is an adult audience for all-ages story-driven games - they can be just as literary as film, theatre and books! 😄❤️🎮📚🎞🎭 The Best Narrative award is probably my favourite category BAFTA Games, alongside Best Family! 😊❤️👍 #gamesindustry #kidsmedia #kidswriting #storytelling #characterwriting
