Sandia National Laboratories is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) federally-funded laboratory exploring a vast range of research topics. 🧪 🔬 With safety and efficiency being high priorities for laboratories, a multidisciplinary team launched a Smart Labs pilot program at Sandia in 2022. The program focused on Building 897—a 30-year-old, multistory, multi-use research facility on Sandia's Albuquerque campus in New Mexico. Using the Smart Labs process, Sandia optimized Building 897's operations, enhanced lab safety, reduced energy costs, and created a framework for future projects. I recently presented our research outcomes at the Champery Power Conference (https://lnkd.in/e5Y9jHYm, many more amazing talks available), summarising our work from the past few years on stability-constrained optimisation for IBRs-dominated power systems. Our framework is designed to integrate dynamic phenomena (a control challenge) into the steady-state operation of power grids (an optimisation problem). This integration not only ensures minimum operational costs with a guarantee of stability but also facilitates the online co-design of IBRs' dynamic behaviour, moving towards a software-defined grid (SDG). This framework effectively links the stability challenges with economic consequences and can be potentially used to inform the designs of IBRs for the vendors, the investment decisions for the asset owners, and the stability market design and operation for the operators. We’ve turned our campus into a 'living laboratory' to test new and emerging smart energy technologies 🔋🌱 The Smart Energy Network Demonstrator project is a European first, allowing us to better understand how we produce, distribute, and consume energy to help us lead more sustainable lives.

On November 6th, Nathaniel "Nat" Draper, M.Ed., VASEM's Executive Director met with Del. David A. Reid from Virginia’s 28th District. Their discussion focused on VASEM's recent research addressing the pressing needs for sustainable power solutions for data centers in Loudoun County. With nearly half of the nation’s data centers located in Northern Virginia—and over 230 in Loudoun County alone—meeting the power demands for next-generation facilities is a critical challenge. VASEM’s report, “Technologies for Powering Virginia Data Centers”, offers a balanced, non-partisan, scientific perspective on potential solutions, including: 🔹 Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) 🔹 Advanced Conductor Materials 🔹 High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) We appreciate the collaborative opportunities between VASEM, Virginia’s universities, policymakers, and industry leaders. 🌍 GE Vernova - GCCSI joint report: The Status of CCUS in France 🌍   I am honored to have co-authored the report “The Status of CCUS in France: Present & Future Opportunities” with the Global CCS Institute (GCCSI), alongside my brilliant colleagues Soren Chemama and Isabelle Achin.   France is undoubtedly one of the pillars for unlocking CCUS in Europe, and serves as a model for effective carbon capture policy. Following the recent publication of the government's CCUS strategy, some further progress still awaits:  • Adopt a technology-neutral approach, including power generation   • Release comprehensive and binding regulations   • Better support industrial CDR technologies, including DAC   • Build an efficient CO2 infrastructure   • Improve strategic coordination along the value chain   • Deepen public-private cooperation   • Strengthen financial synergies   • Address public awareness   France's approach offers a clear path to decarbonization by 2050. 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗜𝗚𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀! The CIGRE Paris session will take place from August 25 – 30. Bastian Fischer is one of our MR experts who will be on site to present his paper titled “Shared digital twins as approach for the data-sovereign collaboration between TSO and 3rd Party in the condition assessment of a transformer fleet”. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 ▪️ The paper outlines the challenges facing Transmission System Operators (TSOs), such as rapidly connecting large amounts of renewable energy while coping with aging assets and staff shortages. ▪️ Digital Twins, which are virtual replicas of assets, are proposed as a solution. They integrate and analyze multiple data sources and represent assets throughout their lifecycle. ▪️ A project between TSO TenneT GmbH and Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen GmbH is discussed, where a common digital twin is implemented to perform collaborative asset condition assessment while maintaining data sovereignty with the TSO. ▪️ The paper concludes by highlighting the potential of digital twins to revolutionize the transformer and power industry, despite the challenges of scarce expertise, incomplete standardization, and issues related to data sovereignty, governance, and identity management among the stakeholders.
