I had the privilege of attending the Industry-Academia conclave hosted by Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI), a thought-provoking gathering that brought together leading minds from the aerospace industry and academia. This conclave served as a vital bridge, fostering collaboration and driving innovation within this dynamic sector 📔 The conclave provided a unique platform for: ·  The Rise of Sustainable Aviation: We explored the latest advancements in sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems, and the role of advanced materials in reducing the environmental impact of air travel. ✈️ ·        AI and Automation in Aviation: The conclave delved into the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in areas such as flight control, air traffic management, and predictive maintenance. 💻 ·        The Future of Air Mobility: We discussed the emergence of advanced air mobility (AAM) concepts, including urban air mobility (UAM) and its potential to revolutionize urban transportation. 🚁 Beyond the insightful presentations, the conclave provided a valuable platform for networking and building relationships. I had the opportunity to connect with industry leaders, academic researchers, and fellow students, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. 🏆 The best part was interacting with the brilliant students, who with their awe-inspiring questions left me startled. It was inspiring to witness the passion and dedication of everyone involved. Simon is a PhD student at the Institute of Flight System Dynamics at Technische Universität München, where he works on certifiable algorithms for control allocation for eVTOLs. He aims to design control allocation methods that utilize over-actuation for fault-tolerance and optimal performance, while being predictable and real-time capable to meet the certification requirements. 🎓 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐡𝐃 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲? Over the past year, my aerospace club has faced many challenges. In aerospace and rocketry, every successful launch comes with a fair share of setbacks, and our high school aerospace club has experienced this firsthand. This journey has been far from easy, from countless design iterations to dealing with unexpected challenges (including a rocket that blew up mid-flight! 💥). But it's been rewarding in ways we never expected. Through these trials, we’ve learned that: 1. Resilience is key – Failures aren't the end; they’re just stepping stones to success. 2. Teamwork makes all the difference—Our group's strength lies in collaboration, problem-solving, and supporting each other when things don’t go as planned. 3. Every challenge is a lesson – Each explosion, malfunction, and redesign taught us more about physics, engineering, and perseverance than a smooth flight ever could. We may not have reached all of our goals yet, but we’ve come further than we ever thought possible. Recently, I presented at AIAA AVIATION, one of the world’s largest #aerospace conferences, held in Las Vegas this year. As a student researcher, I had looked forward to this event for months (Abstract submission for peer-review was 7 months earlier)! We typically go down deep rabbit holes in our technical work and our mind begins to stitch together a cohesive story only when we write a paper. The journey of packaging my work to showcase it to other experts in the field, helped me in realising many shortcomings. I spoke about flapping wing kinematics, the study of wing motion- particularly the speeds of the up-stroke and down-stroke, commonly assumed to be of sinusoidal nature. Why is this so important? Our results showed that a modified sinusoidal equation to govern the wing speeds had several implications on the aerodynamics itself! The idea of changing wing kinematics is widely observed in nature too. More on this in a future post. All in all, it was amazing to visit company stalls & meet fellow researchers that broadened my perspective. I'm very grateful to my advisor Prof Santanu Ghosh who has guided me through these 2 years of research at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Completed the "Digitalization in Aeronautics" course on Coursera , certified by the Technical University of Munich This course provided a deep dive into the vast array of digital applications now crucial for aviation research. From flight simulation programs to advanced data analysis platforms, I gained a comprehensive understanding of how digitalization is revolutionizing the field. My key takeaways: 1. The ubiquitous presence of digital technologies across all aspects of aviation research. 2. The growing complexity in aviation systems, partly driven by digitalization. 3. The exciting potential for innovation and discovery unlocked by these powerful tools. This course has helped me gain insights into the current and future technical advancements shaping the aviation industry and hopefully will be invaluable in my final year research project, which focuses on introducing digitalization initiatives to the Pakistani aviation sector. #DigitalAviation #AviationResearch #Coursera #TUM #Pakistan #PCAA
