This is in a different league to most of the green walls we see in the UK which tend to be intensive (i.e. very little substrate and planted with plants like sedum) and, mostly through poor management it seems, frequently fail: https://lnkd.in/evURPmhu There are some good reasons to be cautious about green walls of course (not least the active maintenance required) and the post-Grenfell Building Safety Act does impose restrictions on their use on 'relevant buildings'. Of course, even where they are allowed, if they fail the dry vegetation would present a higher risk than a thriving swathe of greenery. More on risk here: https://lnkd.in/ez-MkuAS Nonetheless, the Biodiversity Net Gain targets now required that they can help with along with other advantages such as air quality, climate change adaptation, visual amenity, etc mean that they've got a lot going for them if, and here's the rub, their proper care and maintenance is factored in at design and can be assured over the life of the building. And if they can also be productive by producing fruit and vegetables, what's not to like? The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) offer some very useful resources on the use of Nature Based Solutions to address a range of issues, including the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis: https://lnkd.in/ejD-BkAH if you want to know more. #adaptation #climatechange #biodiversitycrisis #greenwall #naturebasedsolutions #biodiversitynetgain
The Urban Farming Office in Ho Chi Minh City is designed to combat the effects of urbanization in Vietnam and reintroduce green space to the city while promoting safe food production. The Urban Farming Office boasts a lush facade overgrown with plant-life that acts as a shading device, filtering direct sunlight and purifying the air. A system of rainwater collection irrigates the hanging vegetation while naturally cooling the air through evaporation. The northern-facing walls are solid with small openings introduced to ensure cross-ventilation, an additional strategy for passive cooling. The ‘vertical farm’ employs simple construction methods, including a concrete and steel structure off of which modular planter boxes are suspended. Planter boxes are replaceable, providing flexibility in the arrangement of plants and sufficient sunlight. The system provides up to 190% of green ratio to the site area, which is equivalent to 1.1 tons of harvest. Various local edible plants, such as vegetable, herb, and fruit tree, are selected, contributing to the biodiversity of the region and maintained with organic treatment methods. Vo Trong Nghia Architects has created an inspiring space that reconnects with the natural roots of its site, addressing the impact of urbanization while contributing to the sustainable future of the city. Congratulations to VTN on this impressive accomplishment! #UrbanFarmingOffice #VoTrongNghiaArchitects #GreenArchitecture #SustainableDesign #Vietnam #HoChiMinhCity https://buff.ly/3JtukjP

The Hilti Village Prototype is under construction in Nasugbu, Batangas, Philippines. The prototype house is a part of an ongoing collaboration with BASE, an initiative of the Hilti Foundation that provides alternative building technologies to enable a network of partners to build quality socialized homes. DDU is collaborating with Base Bahay Foundation, Inc. to update its prototypical village house to improve its capacity to create collective communities at the scale of the settlement through the design of the unitary house. Working with the constraints of the innovative Cement-Bamboo Frame Technology, a simple design change is made to tweak the parallel end walls of the house, which creates circular urban forms at the scale of the settlement. These urban forms are conducive to enabling collective community courtyards, gardens, play spaces, and other common programs. Small yards between pairs of houses facing the larger collective spaces allow for ranges of intimacy and collectivity.
