I'm thrilled to announce that the study I supported alongside my esteemed partners from STOA has been officially published! 📚✨   Our study, titled "Closing the Blue Loops: Responsible and Sustainable Innovation in the Fields of Water and Ocean," evaluates the need and scope for an EIT Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) focused on water, marine, and maritime areas (KIC WMM). This report identifies existing gaps in innovation ecosystems and recommends thematic focus areas with the highest potential for technological development, market deployment, and benefits for EU citizens.   Some key elements of our study include: 🔍 Analysis of key stakeholders, public engagement methods, funding mechanisms, and legal and regulatory barriers. 🌐 Policy recommendations to foster innovation and market deployment in alignment with the European Green Deal and other EU strategies. 💡 Highlighting high-impact technologies for sustainability goals and identifying areas needing further research and regulatory changes. Personally, I contributed to the analysis (SWOT, Gap analysis, Survey) and explored the links between the three components of the triple helix of innovation: Research, Training, and Industries. My particular focus was on the industrial branch within the technological and socio-economic context of the water, marine, and maritime sectors.   I’m eagerly looking forward to discovering the proposals from various EU partners to turn this KIC into a reality. Anticipation and monitoring of emerging technologies and disruptive innovation (ANTICIPINNOV) project is a collaboration between the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) with the European Innovation Council (EIC) to strengthen strategic intelligence capacity through the use and development of anticipatory approaches. A literature review of reports on emerging technologies and disruptive innovation Growing volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, present leading challenges in policy-making nowadays. Anticipatory thinking and foresight are of utmost importance to help explore trends, risks, emerging issues, and their potential implications and opportunities in order to draw useful insights for strategic planning, policy-making and preparedness. The findings include a set of 106 signals and trends on emerging technologies and disruptive innovations across several areas of application based on a review of key reports on technology and innovation trends and signals produced by public and private entities outside of the EU institutions. Its goal is to strengthen the EIC’s strategic intelligence capacity through the use and development of anticipatory approaches that will - among other goals – support innovation funding prioritisation. A recent policy brief by a senior European Commission ESIR advisory group calls for combining regional strengths to narrow the EU #innovationdivide. ERRIN shared comments on the document in the Science|Business article last week. In the brief, the expert group on the economic and societal impact of #research and #innovation (ESIR) addresses the regional innovation divide in Europe and beyond, outlining the causes for the concentration of innovation in hubs. It is argued that hubs are necessary for a strong innovation environment and that instead of flattening the innovation system the emphasis should be shifted to enabling regions to combine their strengths. It is also proposed to deploy #smartspecialisation principles into the R&I framework. ERRIN’s Pirita Lindholm and Ewa Chomicz shared comments on the paper with Science Business. The brief is in line with ERRIN’s thinking about the need for regions to work together and tap into each other’s capacities. We also agree that regional innovation policy needs to be strengthened and extended beyond the silo of #cohesion, with smart specialisation as a good tool for seeking out competitive advantages in each region. At the same time, the focus here shouldn’t be too tight, as regions need to tackle all kinds of complex challenges, for example connected to climate change. #S3 can evolve towards challenge-driven S3, broadening the scope from economic development to addressing more widely the transformation needs of our societies. With the discussions around the future R&I and cohesion policies post-2027 in full swing, ERRIN is actively emphasising the importance of place-based approach, tackling the innovation gap, #EUmissions, ecosystem thinking and #EUPartnerships, among other topics. So happy to officially launch our first funded projects and to meet the research communities of the 27 selected projects in Madrid! This is an important step for our partnership! And a major issue for all of us. In the context of increasing extreme events, it is a priority for the Research and Innovation communities to provide knowledge, solutions and tools to better anticipate and manage droughts and floods. Recently, the European Environment Agency stated that Europe is not prepared for rapidly growing climate risks. Europe is the fastest warming continent in the world and climate risks are threatening its energy and food security, ecosystems, infrastructure, water resource, financial stability and people's health. Of course, the challenge is not only European but global. As a reminder, according to the IPCC reports 90% disasters worldwide are water-related. So let's stay optimistic and join our efforts!
