Today, we honor and remember the lives of transgender individuals lost to violence, hatred, and bigotry. 💔 Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) began in 1999, founded by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith and others in memory of Rita Hester, a Black transgender woman who was murdered in 1998. Her tragic death, like so many others, highlighted the urgent need to shine a light on the violence faced by the transgender community worldwide. Since then, TDOR has grown into an annual day of reflection, resilience, and advocacy. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice, equality, and safety for transgender individuals everywhere. Let’s commit to amplifying transgender voices, challenging discrimination, and supporting policies and actions that affirm and protect transgender lives.
