Kelly Zagore is a 12th quarter chiropractic and functional neurology student. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, she now studies at Life University in Marietta, Georgia. In her time as a student, she has served as the Functional Neurology Club president and is currently studying with the Carrick Institute to become a Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board. At the start of 2025, Kelly will be begin her internship at the Neurological Wellness Institute in Boca Raton, Florida. She aspires to be the best in her field, learning from incredible mentors along the way. Kelly has a special passion for studying neurodevelopment and the cognitive emotional aspects of neurology, but would be thrilled to spark a conversation about all things neurology. My advice to students: “I’ve always been fascinated by the complexity of the brain. I think there is something so magical about the influence it has over our life. What I’ve realized, is that the more I study it, the easier I am able to create and craft a beautiful reality for myself and the people around me. I think this changes everything about the way I see my patients.   If I were to give one piece of advice to students, it would be to embrace the complexity of neurology. Dive in and don’t look back. Know that the long nights, early mornings, and extra efforts will pay themselves back in interest. Invest in yourself. ‘Physiology is not a good course to study in Nigeria’ They said. I can recall that in 2018 after I finished my WAEC and JAMB examinations, my dad had high expectations for me to study Medicine and Surgery. With a JAMB score of 249, it wasn't possible to gain admission to study Medicine at UNIBEN. I chose to apply to Delta State University, Abraka. Sadly, I had a low post-UME score of 46, which did not meet the cutoff for Medicine and Surgery. I pondered on the exact route I wished to follow, recalling how I had mentioned to my father that I was considering studying either Physiotherapy or Physiology. My passion for knowing how the human body functions made the decision clear: I chose Physiology. During my university years, I faced a lot of discouragement. Many people said, "Physiology isn't a good course in Nigeria," and that "there are no jobs for physiologists." All those words weighed on me, but somewhere deep inside, I just knew I should be a physiologist. Despite my inability to find employment as a physiologist, I am optimistic that success is a gradual process, there is hope for the future and I'm determined to keep pushing forward. To all the physiologists out there who may feel like giving up: don’t! Let’s take a moment to celebrate the science that helps us understand the wonders of the human body. 🌟 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐄𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐢𝐝𝐨𝐨 🌟 This vacation, I had the privilege of engaging in a research internship with the Neurology Department at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) under Prof. Patrick Adjei. As a 4th-year medical student at UGMS, this was my first hands-on experience in medical research, and it was both enlightening and inspiring. Our study analyzed EEG Abnormality Patterns in over 1,000 patients referred for Electroencephalography (EEG) at KBTH. This research highlighted EEG’s critical role in detecting seizure disorders and other conditions like sudden collapse and loss of consciousness. From problem statements to data analysis, this journey has deepened my appreciation for research’s role in advancing patient care. A little late in posting, but celebrating here nonetheless! After a tough and long journey, I have officially obtained my PhD in Medicine, specializing in Molecular Neurology. This accomplishment represents many years of hard work and dedication, including: - 4 years for my college degree - 5 years for my medical degree - 4 years for neurology residency training - 2 years of research fellowship, stretched into total of 5.5 years to achieve my PhD degree. #PhDGrad #MolecularNeurology #MedicalEducation #Celebration
