Given that the MLB playoffs are in full swing... Let's talk curveballs. Specifically, the unexpected twists and turns in our businesses... HR. Finance. Sales. Operations. That catch us off guard. The secret in baseball is to "stay back"... Not to rush. But to slow down, and adjust. I think the business strategy secret to these is the same. Slow down. Breathe. Regroup. Then, and only then, take your swing. Curveballs are hittable. We just have to use the right swing.

My Detroit Tigers are on an improbable playoff run with a comically small payroll of less than $20M...for the entire team! For context, a single MLB superstar typically makes double that. If you haven’t tuned in yet (or don’t care to - I get it, baseball can still be slow), this story is compelling for two reasons: 1. A young, relatively unknown team that’s peaking at just the right time. 2. Manager AJ Hinch is a mastermind, using creative, analytics-driven strategies to put his players in the best possible situations to succeed. His approach is bound to influence how the game is played in the future. These Tigers represent the best of Detroit: making the absolute most of what you’ve got. Plus, analytics help. Prime number: $18 million contenders The true MCU (Moneyball Cinematic Universe) might finally get a sequel. The Detroit Tigers, an MLB team made up of players who sound like they were cut from the Backyard Baseball video game (e.g., Dillon Dingler), are in the midst of a generationally improbable playoff run. Their entire payroll is just $18.4 million, less than the individual salaries of 21 different players still playing in this year’s playoffs, the Wall Street Journal reported. That’s also less than half of what New York Yankees star Aaron Judge makes on his own. In a strategy many companies can probably learn from, the Tigers elected to count on their promising young players and develop internal talent rather than spend big on known commodities. The results have been stunning: In August, they were seven games below .500 and had a 0.2% chance of making the playoffs. Now, they’re a handful of victories away from the World Series. It’s a genuine rags-to-riches story that demands a Hollywood adaptation starring Austin Butler as Tigers President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris. https://lnkd.in/gU4Mh3UG

HIREWELL HOT CORNER EPISODE 41: ABC (ALWAYS BE CLOSING) For anyone watching the NBA and NHL playoffs, you've probably noticed there hasn't been much in the way of quick series - not many teams are dominating their competition, and we're seeing plenty of playoff matchups going 6 or the maximum 7 games to decide a winner. This round alone, we had two Game 7 NBA matchups yesterday, and all 4 NHL second round series took at least 6 games to crown a winner. So what does it take to "close out" a series? What's the secret sauce? Louis Morici and I break down what that means for both NBA and NHL teams before transitioning to discussing the different times we're "closing" in our world: - Closing a prospective client - Closing out an interview process with an offer to a candidate - Closing the deal for a job seeker going through the interview process Check out the full video below for our tips and tricks in all areas, and be sure to watch until the end to hear Louie's expert two-minute drill predictions (he was pretty spot on). #hhc #hirewell #nbaplayoffs #nhlplayoffs #closingthedeal #alwaysbeclosing

The easiest way to describe recruiting teams at most companies is that is similar to the catching position in baseball. A bad catcher can make a great team average and a great catcher can make an average team great.
