I have completed all three courses from the UBC Faculty of Forestry and Haida Gwaii Institute for my Co-Management of Natural Resources certificate. A great window into the history, present and future of co-management.

Going into college, I thought I had a clear idea of what direction my career was going to take. Being a first generation college student, I had dreamed of the day when I could say that I had successfully graduated medical school. Needless to say, I had the next 8 years of my life planned out down to the most minute detail. Come my second year however, I couldn’t shake this lingering feeling of dissatisfaction. I had what most pre-med students dream of: a good gpa, an internship, and medical related EC’s. Yet still, I couldn’t find any fulfillment in my work anymore. That was, until I had taken my first biostatistics course. Quickly I found myself falling in love with prediction methodologies and the programming applications, and before I knew it I was hooked. Against the judgement of my advisors and pre-med peers I switched my major to statistics upon completion of my second year of college. Since then I have been a sponge of information, relentlessly self-teaching myself relevant programming languages and packages, packing my academic quarters with units, and keeping up to date with the advancements we as a society are currently making in the field. This was done all with the goal of graduating on time without feeling like I had sacrificed the quality of my education to do so. A year later, and I find myself today completing the first week of my professional career as a Data Science Assistant working on the T-REX and GRAPEX projects. I want to thanks Nicolas Bambach, Kyle Knipper, and Mina Swintek for the hiring process and giving me the opportunity to grow alongside our lab here at UC Davis in partnership with the USDA-ARS. Looking back to where I was a year ago and comparing that to where I am today, I can’t help but smile walking into work everyday. Going from not knowing whether you were going to graduate on time to landing a position like this one is not a feeling I can put into words. What I can say is that I am excited to develop my skills, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. For more information on the projects I will be working on, check out this article:

As it is #GlobalOutdoorLearningDay today, we thought it would be good to recap and share again on what we do where at LANSS. What is LANSS? We here at Land and Nature Skills Service (LANSS) connect people with learning and training opportunities in the land and nature-based sectors across Cumbria. We offer a wide range of courses and opportunities in areas such as agriculture, horticulture, nature conservation and forestry. We aim to support learners of all ages, whether they are new to the sector, looking to change careers, or seeking to enhance their existing skills. We also work with providers of education and training, as well as employers in the land and nature sectors, to coordinate and promote effective training programmes. Our offerings include accredited and non-accredited courses, apprenticeships, mentoring, student placements, and volunteering opportunities. LANSS is a partnership initiative from Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, University of Cumbria, The Farmer Network and Cumbria Wildlife Trust. It is also funded by grants from entities such as the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Defra’s Farming in Protected Landscape Programme. Are you an agribusiness or natural resource management organisation operating in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) catchment? 💭 Increase your capacity with a partially funded FTE role focused on providing extension services in the GBR catchments. 👇 The Agricultural Extension Work Placement Program (AEWPP) connects early career extension professionals with host organisations in reef catchments. Hosts have the great opportunity to boost their extension capacity and knowledge in sustainable management practices that reduce nutrients, sediment and pesticides flowing into the Reef. The program builds agricultural extension capacity, supports landholders and helps improve water quality for the Reef. The Queensland Farmers' Federation are looking for host organisations interested in facilitating these 15-month work placements which will start in early 2025. The AEWPP 2023–2026 is delivered by Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) and funded by the Queensland Reef Water Quality Program. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eGnVkgdf #QueenslandEnvironment

........Any Ecology/Environmental Businesses Want To Take On An Middle Aged Apprentice? As the title suggests, I have been wanting to re-train into the Ecology and Environmental Management industry, but unfortunately I do not have the funding etc for any worthwhile courses, so an Apprenticeship seems a very inticing way to go and as the CIEEM Level 7 and now a Level 4 Apprenticeship program is in the development stages, I feel that this is an Ideal Opportunity to develop your business and bring on an Apprentice. Realistically, It would ideally be a company in Shropshire and surrounding areas, as i'm not in a position to relocate and as Harper Adams University is sign posted to take on this Apprenticeship Scheme for the West Midlands, this would be a fantastic opportunity as i'm based in Coalport, shropshire. I'm currently have a couple of IEMA Courses lined with Learn Direct as well as an Rewilding and Conservation Manager Course, in which I have started, all these are a Level 3 course and I have a few more relevent courses that I have in mind to do so when this Apprenticeship fully rolls out, which I think is in March and again in October 2025, I would have learnt the Basics, so I would not be approaching this completely blind. Also, bear in mind that I'm a Member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture so will have a good understanding of Studying on a High Level, I am also self studying on a Basic level in Forestry and Woodland Management, i'm also a Technician level Member of the Arboriculture Association, so again, I have a good broad knowledge of the Environmental Industry. But, it is Ecology, especially in the sense of Arboriculture that i'm most interested and eager to study/Work into. So, what are you waiting for, get yourself a very willing and eager senior apprentice! #naturalengland #wildlifetrusts #cieem #ecology #environmentalmanagement
