A very animated Humphrey! Humphrey is a remarkable creation, the result of painstaking effort and innovation by a team of dedicated engineers. It is a hybrid Fluidised Bed (HFB) gasifier. This technology combines the benefits of bubbling and circulating fluidised bed technologies while addressing the challenges of higher pressure. The path to Humphrey's creation was challening. The engineers faced technical hurdles, but they persevered. Just as they were nearing the finish line, the war in Ukraine sent shockwaves through the global economy. This caused dramatic price increases. Navigating these turbulent waters required courage, determination, and unwavering dedication from the team. But now, Humphrey has been brought to life, ushering in a new era of highly efficient biomass gasification. And now, we even animated Humphrey – “he” really is one of our Bio-FlexGen stars! #biomass #cleanenergy #energyefficiency #powergeneration

What is a Hybrid Fluidized bed Gasifier? At Phoenix, we have invented and are developing a new type of fluidized gasifier for pressurized gasification. A fluidized bed gasifier means that sand is used to transfer heat to the fuel to drive gasification. There are typically two types of fluidized gasifiers: Bubbling and Circulating. In a bubbling gasifier, the fuel is "boiled" in sand whereas in a circulating one, the fuel and the sand circulates through the cyclone together. The two technologies both have benefits and challenges when it comes to pressurized gasification. Benefits: Bubbling beds can take bigger particles and circulating gasifiers are less tall. Downsides: Bubbling gasifiers needs to be very tall to allow small particles to drop back down to the bed and Circulating beds become very narrow with pressure, to the point that the feed screw is almost the same diameter as the reactor. By combining the two by using dual particle size bet material, we get the benefits from both technologies while at the same time addressing the downsides. Pretty clever if you ask us! In this great film produced within our EU project Bio-FlexGen, our technology is well illustrated. The Bubbling part of the gasifier is mainly the red section at the bottom, with bigger sand particles and you can see the circulating function of the smaller particles returning through the cyclone back to the bottom of the gasifier. Two technologies - One hybrid gasifier!

Reducing the oxygen content of biomass-derived compounds is essential to widen the utility of biomass-derived compounds, especially in fuel jet related industries. In this report, we utilized vapor-phase deoxydehydration of biomass-derived 2,3-butanediol over silica-supported MoO3 catalyst. A series of elementary reactions, energy calculation by density functional theory, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were performed to unravel the plausible reaction mechanism of 2,3-butanediol transformation to 2-butene. 🎉 Exciting Update from Prabhu Energy Labs! 🎉 Without the need for a catalyst, their Oxiperator efficiently oxidizes 0.5% methane in air continuously, while requiring no added heat or fuel. Prabhu Energy Labs‘ “Oxiperator” is an all-metal, porous heat exchanger that oxidizes weak methane without generating NOx. The Oxiperator consumes methane emissions as weak as 0.3% volume (mixed in air) and can power a gas turbine at concentrations as low as 1.5%. Follow them for more updates on emissions reduction. #CalTestBedCohort3 #VRNews #MethaneMitigation #EnvironmentalInnovation
We did it! The Oxiperator works: 0.5% methane in air, oxidized continuously, without a catalyst. No added heat or fuel. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/g2ch6NFV Test results validated by the team at University of California, Davis STEEL Lab. Engineering collaborators include Carnegie Mellon University, Colorado State University, Czero, Alturdyne.
