The 2025 QS World University Rankings have just been released and show that yet again, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is ranked as the best university in the World. If we examine the top 200 universities globally we find that 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿23 universities in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 3 universities in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 1 in Wales Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd is the only Welsh university ranked in the top 200 this year although its position has dropped from 156 to 186 having achieved its top ranking of 122 in 2016. Cardiff is ranked in the top 50 globally for Communication and Media Studies and ranked in the top 100 for Architecture/Built Environment, Dentistry, English Language & Literature, Psychology, Nursing, Social Policy & Administration, Sociology, and Pharmacy and Pharmacology. Want to innovate advanced Li batteries 🔋 🔋 🔋 ? We have a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow position at UCL on my EPSRC IAA grant on "Prototyping Advanced Li Batteries Using Scalable Templating Layers". This project will be led by Yaoguang Song 宋曜光 and Alex Rettie at UCL - Electrochemical Innovation Lab (EIL), UCL Chemical Engineering. The project objectives primarily include developing advanced battery prototypes by using scalable thin-film templating layers, extending our technology to higher TRLs for commercialisation. Main duties include: 1) making battery cells for all-solid-state batteries and lithium-ion batteries (coin cells up to pouch cells); 2) making battery cells based on different approaches including cathode coating, anode coating, and anode-free configuration; 3) conducting electrochemical characterisation of battery cells (e.g., EIS, CV, cycling tests) and analysing battery materials and battery cells by various techniques (e.g., X-ray CT, SEM, TEM). Congratulations to our IE faculty, Dr. Xiaomei Wang and Dr. Luis Segura, who serve as Co-PIs on a $600,000 NSF grant! The 3-year NSF grant is titled, "Combining Machine Learning Explanation Methods with Expectancy-Value Theory to Identify Individualized Targets for Intervention for Engineering Student Persistence." This Engaged Student Learning Level 2 project innovates in this area by applying well-established predictive machine learning (ML) methods and cutting-edge ML explanation methods to engineering student data (demographic, survey, and performance data) to predict which students might leave and why, such that interventions can be targeted to meet individual student needs. The intellectual merit of this study is to generate knowledge and streamline a methodology for the identification of targeted, individualized interventions for engineering persistence from student data. Establishing a methodology will allow engineering education researchers to begin intervening in the first year to help at-risk students persist. Broader impacts include the local, national, or international adoption of our methods to improve engineering persistence on a local, nation-wide, or global scale. Johns Hopkins rose to No. 6 among national universities—our highest-ever position in the U.S. News & World Report rankings of the nation's #BestColleges for undergraduates! Our Biomedical Engineering program is number 1. We're 13th overall in engineering and 6 Hopkins Engineering disciplines were ranked! This year Hopkins had the lowest median student debt among all national universities, an ongoing reflection of the transformative $1.8 billion gift from philanthropist, business leader, and Johns Hopkins alumnus Mike Bloomberg to support undergraduate financial aid. The funds have helped to cut the average Hopkins graduate's federal loan debt in half since 2018. U.S. News also ranked Hopkins No. 10 for value, based on a combination of academic quality and net cost of attendance. Today PhD students are equipped with valuable research skills. However, many programs struggle to prepare graduates for the private sector. On Friday 20 September 2024, Christian Wewer from ECE will be defending his PhD dissertation. The title of the PhD thesis is: ”𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬” During his PhD studies, Christian researched the integration of digital twins and machine learning models for optimizing industrial drying processes. His research addresses major challenges in the field, such as data scarcity and the complexity of implementing machine learning models in factory environments. The research findings contribute to the optimization of drying processes, and furthermore, the methods and software developed during the project can be generally applied to other processes with similar data modalities. R1 and R2 universities are schools in the United States classified as research universities in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. For the 2021 Carnegie Classifications, several variables are used to classify institutions: extramural research expenditures, number of doctoral degrees awarded in science and engineering, number of doctoral degrees awarded in other disciplines outside of science and engineering, per capita faculty research expenditures, number of research staff such as postdoctoral employees, research associates, research faculty and research assistants.
