With the wet season approaching, we can expect more costly and disruptive landslides like these. But a new study by Earth and Planetary Sciences Professor Noah Finnegan, along with researchers at the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics, presents a framework for predicting how much motion to expect based on a change in rainfall. This model can serve as another tool to assist operational decisions on a more informed basis: https://lnkd.in/gVC3icdS

What drives large-scale extensional strain in southern Tibet? In our latest collaborative study, we tackle this key question by combining Sentinel-1 InSAR and GNSS data to produce high-resolution maps of 3D velocities and strain rates across Southern Tibet. We focused on seven major rift zones, uncovering the details of how the region is extending at a total rate of 18.4 mm/yr. This work wouldn’t have been possible without the fantastic collaboration between researchers from the China Earthquake Administration, Nanjing University, and the Computational Geophysics Lab at Nanyang Technological University Singapore, Earth Observatory of Singapore, and NTU Asian School of the Environment. 📰 New Post! 🌋👩🎓 Last week, high school students from the Centre López Vicuña Barcelona dove into the world of geophysics at the Geociencias Barcelona - CSIC (GEO3BCN-CSIC)! From forecasting earthquakes to simulating volcanic ash dispersal on a supercomputer, they discovered how projects like DT-GEO and ChEESE CoE are helping us understand our planet. A big thanks to Paula Herrero Barbero, PhD, and Alejandra Guerrero López for inspiring young minds and proving that geosciences are anything but boring ➡️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/daNC2kVz #Geophysics #STEMEducation #Earthquakes #Volcanoes #HPC #ScienceOutreach #DTGEO #ChEESECoE #Supercomputing #HandsOnScience

👀 Read the new volume of the #BGO, Bulletin of Geophysics and Oceanography. It is the #OGS international open access journal of Earth Sciences
📣 The new volume of #BGO is out! 🌏 The new volume of #BGO (Bulletin of Geophysics and Oceanography) collects a selection of papers presented during the 41st annual national conference of the Gruppo Nazionale di Geofisica della Terra Solida (GNGTS), that was established in 1978 as an offshoot of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) to promote, develop, and coordinate research in the field of solid Earth geophysics. 🌐 The #GNGTS annual conference, a recurring event for more than 40 years now, is the spontaneous meeting point for all researchers who work, even in different roles, in #geophysics, #seismology, #geology, and #volcanology, as well as all the scientific branches that collaborate to improve our knowledge of the #solidEarth. Link -> https://lnkd.in/dp7CAkkb ----- The journal was published under the name Bollettino di Geofisica Teorica e Applicata (Bulletin of Theoretical and Applied Geophysics); its first issue dates back to March 1959, and in 2021 it acquired its current name. The Bulletin of Geophysics and Oceanography is a quarterly publication and is devoted to publishing original articles dealing with surface geophysics, deep geophysics, well geophysics, exploration geophysics, geodynamics and seismotectonics, seismology, engineering-related seismology, geophysical modelling, geodesy, remote sensing, seismic and geodetic theses, oceanography, and their application in the fields of energy, natural resources, environment and climate, policy and regulation, risk and security, technological development.
