South West Local Jobs are celebrating International Migrants Day, and the migrants that work within our local South West Community. Migrants play an important and valued role in the employment landscape, particularly in addressing skills shortages. According to an article by the Australian Industry Group, migrants account for a 21.5% share of the employed workforce in WA, which has been deemed an attractive destination due to its strong mining sector. Occupational outcomes for migrants in Australia vary depending on skill level, visa category, language proficiency, and the recognition of overseas qualifications, shaping the types of job roles migrants secure. In a world that thrives on diversity and talent, Australia stands as a beacon for skilled migrants seeking new opportunities. Today Hassan Raza and I had to opportunity and privilege of talking to the Skilled Migrants at #TAFE, where we witnessed firsthand the remarkable potential and expertise that skilled migrants bring to our shores. Thank you Nancy Wang for providing us such an invaluable opportunity to meet these wonderful people. We met a diverse group of TAFE students taking part in the #skilledmigrantsprogram, who have recently migrated to Australia, each equipped with a wealth of skills and experiences from their respective fields. From IT specialists to healthcare professionals, engineers to accountants, the room was brimming with talent and enthusiasm. However, despite their immense potential, skilled migrants often face unique challenges when navigating the Australian job market. Language barriers, cultural differences, and unfamiliarity with local regulations can pose significant obstacles to their integration. As employers and community members, it is our responsibility to provide support and resources to help them overcome these challenges and thrive in their new environment. In conclusion, the #TAFEtalk was a testament to the incredible talent and potential of skilled migrants in Australia. As we continue to embrace #diversity and harness the skills of individuals from around the world, we not only #enrich our communities but also strengthen our economy and drive innovation forward. Meaningful employment plays a critical role in successful settlement of migrants and refugees. Lack of recognition or delays in recognition of their overseas qualification is a huge barrier for new arrivals to find suitable employment in Australia. In 2023, the International Organisation for Migration reported that there are over 281 million international migrants worldwide, comprising 3.6% of the global population. The United Nations noted that migrants often encounter barriers to healthcare, education, and employment. This day calls for the protection of migrants' rights and the promotion of inclusive policies.
