Wrapping up 2024 on a high note! Today, we welcomed over 40 talented PhD Navigator participants and representatives from our eight partner universities in Mathematics for an exciting start to their PhD journey with the Martingale Foundation. Unlike traditional Scholarships, we take a unique approach and recruit candidates before they apply to universities. Why? Because the hidden curriculum can be a major barrier, particularly for individuals from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Over the coming months, we’ll work intensively with our participants to help them: ✅ Identify the right universities and supervisors ✅ Develop strong, well-rounded PhD applications ✅ Gain invaluable interview and application training Today marks the first of many support events, offering opportunities to: 🌟 Network with our university partners 🌟 Hear from current PhD students 🌟 Start shaping their next steps In the new year, participants will receive tailored support, ensuring they are prepared for their PhD applications and interviews. At Martingale Foundation, we know that financial support is crucial, but we also recognize that the barriers to academia extend far beyond finances—and we’re here to tackle them head-on. Wishing the best of luck to all our PhD Navigator participants in their applications!

I really enjoy delivering my workshop on The importance of attending conferences and how to make the most of the attendance. It is based on my PhD research and the feedback greatly surrounds how workshop attendees have gained confidence in attending academic conferences, importance of grabbing the opportunities and deeper understanding of the multiple outcomes conference attendance can provide. It’s interesting to hear the different perceptions of academic and industry conferences – something my research also found – expanding you comfort zone is challenging. The storytelling approach to the research is also applied within the workshop with good feedback. #conference #outcomes #learninganddevelopment #researchimpact

It has been a conference-packed fortnight! What a great 10th Researcher Education and Development Scholarship Conference today. Mind you, there is nothing like finding yourself doing a surprise paper on 36 hours to keep you on your toes (thanks to Ruth Currie for being chill about my repurposing our work on "Holding Space for Reflective Supervisory Praxis" from CoPhS last week!). My 3 top highlights from today were: ⭐ The compelling Keynote from Faith Uwadiae about how research leadership starts from self-leadership: there is no need for titles, we all lead. I loved her circle reflective questions (1) Who am I? (2) How do others experience me? (3) Where am I leading now? (4) What type of leader do I want to be in those spaces? ⭐ The inspiring paper from Anna Brady about how to take a whole-organisation approach to re-building trust and bring adaptive leadership into entrenched and problematic organisational cultures. ⭐ Finally Selvi Jeyaseelan and Julie Reeves left me with not one (RE-AIM: Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, implementation, maintenance) but two (KAP: Knowledge Attitudes Practices) important models to build with when planning the 2025 suite of University of Glasgow Talent Lab research leadership programmes (https://lnkd.in/eDNu7Cx7)
📢Today is the day of the 10th Researcher Education and Development Scholarship Conference #REDS2024. 👋We’re looking forward to welcoming Conference Chair Kay Guccione, Keynote Speaker Faith Uwadiae and our presenters to talk to participants about ‘Developing Research Leaders Fit for the Future’. 📚https://lnkd.in/e4-sGjRz We have an exciting day of presentations ahead!
