Completely agree and I would argue it's the same for podcast editing. If you expect/want your podcast editor to write show notes, create audiograms and offer creative direction and podcast strategy then guess what? You want a podcast producer. It bugs me when my job is diluted to podcast editor because the editing is a relatively small part of the package, and one you could outsource very cheaply/do yourself/use AI tools like Descript for. As a podcast producer, I do a lot more than that. From writing clickable titles, show notes, creating artwork, audiograms, strategy, and support I do a LOT and my rates reflect that. My journalism background and almost a decade of podcast experience play into that too. That's not to say everyone needs a podcast producer because they absolutely don't. But if you know you want to start a podcast and have no time, then consider how much more than the editing you'll need to outsource.

If you hire a social media manager expecting them to do market research and come up with brilliant content ideas then guess what...you're not hiring a social media manager...you're hiring a social media strategist, content creator, and creative director. As someone who started their career as a Social Media Manager, I was always required to wear several different hats. This experience has been a blessing, forcing me to develop skills in many areas. I am thankful for this in the long run, but it also came with years of having to fight an uphill battle to have employers understand my value. Now THIS is something I wish I could shout from the rooftops. If you are paying your SMM $15/hour, do NOT expect them to do market research, competitive analysis, or strategy. Those are super valuable, high-level skills. “Just make a post” is almost never as simple as all that, and “build us a thriving community” is an insane request when you’re paying peanuts or only employing someone three hours per week. Strategy is a key component to communications and it cannot be overlooked. All too often, social media (especially) is seen as this fun little platform we use, when in reality, it is one of our strongest tools. This means it must be taken seriously and have a strategy aligned to it.

Social Media Management is one role that always expects a person to wear over 10 hats, and work 24 hours a day but get paid peanuts and pennies.
