The COP29 Summit has officially begun in Baku today to discuss tangible solutions to the global climate crisis and ensure that we do not let the target of 'below 1.5 degrees' slip out of reach. Scotland's target for net-zero emissions by 2045 will have a big impact on the construction industry that currently contributes to 39% of global carbon emissions. At RKA we are pleased to see the increased standard for buildings especially a reduction in operation carbon costs and emphasis on clean energy uses. We see these standards as a base line and are always striving to surpass them where possible. To celebrate our projects that go above and beyond for sustainability and as a way of documenting the efforts and achievements of our clients we have created the RKA Sustainability Awards. Projects are awarded bronze if they consider sustainability beyond building regulations, silver is awarded to projects striving for a smaller carbon footprint and gold is awarded to those projects that have sustainability at the heart of every design move, striving for the lowest impact possible. #architecture #design #standrews #glasgow #sustainabledesign #sustainability #COP29 #baku #climatechange #netzero #carbonemissions #cleanenergy #renewableenergy #scottishdesign #scottisharchitecture #archdaily

Duratec’s Environment and Sustainability Lead Samantha Bell recently attended the Net Zero Construction Summit in Sydney. This conference provided a forum for designers, contractors and sustainability professionals alike to collaborate and discuss how the construction industry can achieve Net Zero. The conference was of great value for Duratec, allowing our team to gain insight into strategies, technologies and materials that reduce the impact on the environment, whilst also understanding how this differs from our biodiversity footprint. Duratec remains future-focused and will continue to identify innovations and opportunities that enable us to act sustainably and limit our carbon footprint. https://lnkd.in/gFTwr63T #Duratec #DuratecAustralia #NetZeroConstructionSummit

I would like to thank Fiona Skinner at UNIDO for inviting me to be the key note speaker at her brilliantly moderated Decarbonizing Building Materials session at the first ever UN sponsored Buildings & Climate Global Forum in Paris. I gained a lot from this historic event - the first ever global forum focused around the COP28 Buildings Breakthrough, and hope the other 2000+ attendees did also. Some of my key takeaways: * We are NOT on track - https://lnkd.in/ekgfYYuH as demonstrated by the brilliant Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) - latest global status report - read it! * To get on track we need systemic changes around; Reductions in consumption - much more for much less (better utilize what we have, efficient design, circular economy, ...) - work all the levers! Engagement around ensuring that the already established decarbonisation pathways for major materials that we simply can't pivot away from in the time frame we're talking (steel, cement, aluminium, etc.) are all aligned, supported by policy and happening. Hyper-charging of innovation around low carbon and bio-based genuine alternatives (channeling - R&D collaboration, design, investment, demand signals, legislation/codes/standards, insurance/risk, ....) Bio-materials means more than timber! Don't forget nature! Most impact within the built environment is embodied in the materials/products we use. Embodied carbon & embodied nature together. Most new building will not be in the global North-West. We need to much better recognize & support this. * With the right level of industry wide understanding and collaboration, supported by bold policy & legislation = we can do this! But we have to be all in, together...... I hope this will now be a regular event and look forward to the next Global Forum demonstrating the progress needed. #UNIDO #UNGlobalABC #Buildingsandclimateglobalforum #decarbonisation #netzero #arup

Advantages for Construction Sector Early Adopters of COP-driven Regulations The conclusion of COP28 marks the beginning of a sustainable era for the construction sector in the UAE. Development and construction organizations need to revisit and fine-tune their plans for the new year in light of the formal frameworks and regulations that will be introduced. On December 10th, the UAE Cabinet came together to officially adopt the National Guide for Smart Construction, the Carbon Credits Registration System, and the National Biodiversity Strategy. These initiatives hold significant relevance for the real estate and construction companies operating in the country. Early adopters who embrace climate initiatives will gain advantages such as enhanced operational efficiency, increased customer appeal, better risk management, access to alternative finance, and future-proofing their businesses. To thrive in the region's sustainable and net-zero future, it is imperative for companies to not only align themselves with government initiatives but also integrate proactive measures that reflect the region's commitment to sustainability. 🌍💧🌱 Find out more about this article: https://lnkd.in/euv32TvG #COP28 #climatechange #construction #sustainability

Think about living buildings...the construction products and final structures increase natural resources and healthy vegetation. What vegetation do you love to see around you? Which birds? Which insects? Which mammals? When they run away from a habitat, should you be there? At Centre for Science and Technology Innovations (CSTI) we are contributing to Global ABC goals by creating awareness and innovation towards reducing harmful chemicals and promoting safer ones.
