Globally, there are very few urban centres within World Heritage Areas. Being an LGA nested within and adjacent to a World Heritage Area comes with inherent challenges and opportunities. It means there is the need to integrate ecological principles at all levels of urban and peri-urban planning, development, and management. At our conference, we explored sensitive urban and water design to learn about creating healthier and more sustainable cities. In case you missed it, here’s a quick recap from this session, titled “Building a Sustainable Urban Interface with World Heritage.”

❓ ❓ ❓ Can research influence policy ? We researchers tend to think we know what real-world situations are, but it is difficult to know what you do not know. It requires leaving your comfort zone. The intensive ICCROM workshop “Managing #Urban #Heritage for #Sustainable #Development in World Heritage Context” in Bamberg (Germany) brought #AGREE team with amazing WH Site Team Managers / Coordinators (see Francesca Giliberto, PhD's post to know who they are). In addition to the issues in Francesca's post, we also talked about the need to break the individual silos, to come together, to leave comfort zones, to mediate the change (and -of course- mapping the attributes 😀). I do believe that research can influence policy, but only when it is informed by the realities of local conditions and only when silos are broken.

Yesterday, I attended the workshop “Managing #Urban #Heritage for Sustainable Development in World Heritage Context” in Bamberg (Germany) with my AGREE colleagues, Mesut Dinler as well as Paloma Guzman and Ole Fredrik Unhammer (online). Organised by ICCROM and the World Heritage Office Bamberg (thank you! 🙏 ), and bringing together #academics and World Heritage #site #managers based in various institutions across Europe, the workshop stimulated a fruitful 🌱 conversation on how to improve current urban heritage #governance, #management systems, and World Heritage management plans. We also reflected on how to develop an #integrated #framework for World Heritage management in an urban context. It has also been a moment to think about the next steps, possible #partnerships, and ongoing and future synergies. I've had a few very intense days travelling and juggling multiple commitments, but I feel completely re-energised now ✨ and ready to take on the challenge of contributing to #transformative urban heritage governance. The #AGREE team is at the starting line, ready to go! 🚀 Thanks Simona von Eyb, Rohit Jigyasu, Nicole Franceschini, Ge Li, Matthias Ripp, Monia Del Pinto, Juliana Strogan, Xenia Jakubek, Wang Yu, Luana Alessandrini for making this such a fruitful and pleasant event! Hear from Tom Faulkner, Managing Director for Hines in the Nordics, live and in person at the 2024 ULI Australia Conference. Tom will unpack the nature of the Nordic living sector (compared to other UK/European markets), private ownership versus rental segments, relevant regulation, distribution of public housing, the proportionate share of institutional capital that really drives the market, and how product development is so essential to support relevant, affordable housing for a growing and urbanising population. Alongside regulation and financing, Tom will address construction and procurement, where the Nordic discussion on ‘build to live and millennial strategies’ can be quite progressive especially as it relates to community, sustainability performance and decarbonisation. Global thought leaders like Tom will help solve Australia's decarbonisation challenges, unpack best practice outcomes for the densification of our built environment, and identify what we can do right now to enable the next generations to thrive in our cities. Meet Tom and other world-class experts from Australia and around the globe and experience a unique program of conversations and presentations that will stimulate your thinking, grow your knowledge, and empower you to forge connections across the ULI's global network. 👉 REGISTER NOW: https://lnkd.in/g_f3eNaM #ULIAustralia #ULIGlobalFutures #CitiesInTransformation
