The next Building Feminist Cities (BFC) event is taking place in Brasília, Brazil, on August 13th & 14th. 🔎 But what is the BFC series? 🏛 👩 The first Building Feminist Cities event was launched in response to Germany’s first Feminist Development Policy, initiated by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in 2023. 🤝 The event series brings together feminist thinkers and activists, high-level government officials, transport workers, development bank representatives, multilateral and bilateral organizations, private sector, academics, and civil society members to discuss, reimagine, and co-create feminist transport systems. 🚶♀️ 🚍 With the Women Mobilize Women event series, we aim to foster a diverse, global community committed to building more feminist, resilient, and adaptable transport systems capable of handling increasing societal and climate shocks. Connecting regional expertise and defining what feminist transport policy means in each context, with its own challenges and opportunities, is a key goal of the series. 🔎 How is the event series designed? 🏙 🚴♀️ The Building Feminist Cities Series is co-designed with local partners to ensure cultural sensitivity and relevance. It features diverse leading thinkers and practitioners, includes organized field trips for practical application, and involves comprehensive stakeholder mapping to select key speakers and participants. It’s nice to work, and even better when the return involves such activities. What a break from all interviews... Last week I participated in a special event that aligns closely with my values and beliefs. The Vital Voices Global Dialogue, which took place as part of the 15th edition of the DVF Awards in Venice had lots of inspiring and deep conversations, shared ideas related to the new model of leadership – how women leaders who face challenges by acting on the principles of inclusion, empathy, and progress can make it better. How we can create a better world together - men and women, older and younger generations, activists, artists, politicians, ... people of all nations. We discussed the current global situation, moving on to setting goals and identifying the audience for our future actions. Then it was time for specific tools and actions, which started to take effect immediately after the workshop ended. Meeting women from over 20 different countries around the world and hearing their stories, exchanging observations and solutions, was truly inspiring experience. One might say that there could be many differences between us, but honestly, the only thing I felt was unity and empowerment. Each of our voices, though telling different stories based on completely different experiences, shouted loudly the same thing – we want to act together towards strength and the fight against unjust governments, laws, and discrimination. Each of us fights in a different way, setting up initiatives, leading different groups. What is beautiful is that for those few days we were able to understand and unite so well. After last difficult weeks, Venice gave me exactly what I needed: wind beneath my wings and reassurance that what I am doing is necessary and important. I left there charged with positive energy to continue working here in Poland, where women's issues are closest to my heart. Ahead of us is the Summit, and today we had a kick off of the first stage of the 7th edition of "I Am a Leader." Is 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 really the right approach in a field where ability should be the prime criterion? As Ayn Rand argued in 1964, '𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘭. 𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘮 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴.' Shouldn’t ETH’s goal be to elevate individual excellence rather than enforce identity metrics? If we ensure equality of opportunity, as Thomas Sowell noted in 1999, '𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘰 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴.' Let’s focus on fostering genuine 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁 and capability, 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 from race, sex, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and religion.

After a fairly heavy-hearted gathering in May as we all tried to make some sort of sense about the problem in our society of violence against women, our gathering last week was quite a bit "lighter". Here are some insights/themes from our conversation: 🌟 The challenge of recognising the humanity in those we disagree with - "who's the human in there?" Perhaps if we can see the human, we can find new ways forward together, even if we don't agree. Daniel Kahneman talked about "adversarial collaboration" - the notion that I respect you, you're an intelligent/thoughtful/etc person, "we must both be right - let's find out where we're right". 🌟The art of dialogue. Have we lost our "conversational intelligence", our sense of what is appropriate in which contexts? The importance of creating spaces to practice the art, to try out different ways of being and relating in conversation. 🌟We may be social beings, but there is a sense that we've gone from "we" to "I". We need to find ways back from our "solo-selves" to a sense of belonging and togetherness. 🌟Sometimes we forget that words can only take us so far - "the only thing that could change her mind was a new experience". 🌟When you don't know the outcome, focus on the process. And for anyone interested in a couple of process reflections...: 💡When things get tricky, it can be easy to say "I agree with you". Perhaps we need to get better at noticing when there is too much agreement and get more comfortable with giving and receiving "gentle provocations". 💡We keep forgetting to use the "pause" to slow things down even though we all agree it is important! 💡We're getting better at remembering to "close" our gatherings, and these moments are often the most powerful - reflecting on how we're feeling at the end of the conversation and sharing the things that struck us as we talked. Did you know that approximately 35% of people in Sweden are either foreign born or the child of someone foreign born? One of our goals here at New to Sweden is to make sure that absolutely everyone, no matter their background, feels more included. But what is inclusion, anyway? For us, inclusion means that every person in Sweden feels welcome, safe and free to be their authentic selves. In the workplace, it means knowing that they are part of a fair and equal hiring and progression process — that it’s a level playing field. But the truth is there’s no quick fix. Inclusion takes a sustained effort across many levels of society. And that’s why, since we started almost 4 years ago, New to Sweden has focused on 3 main pillars. 🟡 Internationals: We guide internationals in the Swedish labor market through training programs like Ready to Work. 🔵 Employers: We collaborate with employers to help them attract and retain people with different backgrounds. Our inclusion workshops have allowed us to work with companies like Google, Securitas, Nordea, SEB, and Vattenfall. 🟣 Communities: We engage with our local Swedish communities, like through the 1046 Inclusion Initiative. Our goal is to show people that Sweden’s diversity is more than just numbers and statistics. Proud 😃 and excited 🤗 to present this little side project I initiated at the city of Lausanne last year. Thanks to OBC Transeuropa and the European Data Journalism Network, the city of Lausanne Lausanne joined a remarkable initiative to map 🗺 diversity across Europe. But how to map diversity and how to compare it between cities ⁉ Simple, you take all odonyms of a city (some 700 for Lausanne) and you classify it 📊. This European-wide exercise uncovers classical biases, such as religious influences, with streets often named after saints ✝ So, how does Lausanne fare 😅 compared to 32 other cities and 155,000 streets? Quite well, actually. In Lausanne, 12% of streets honor women, which is above the European average of 9%. This figure is on the rise ⬆ as cities increasingly prioritize diversity in their naming conventions. 🏳️🌈 Why are companies dropping their support and sponsorship for Copenhagen Pride? 🏳️🌈 Today is the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT)… which got me into reflecting mode! As a Maersk employee and a volunteer within the Human Rights team at Copenhagen Pride, I’ve closely witnessed the recent events concerning sponsorship and support. While I have reservations about the communication approach and some decisions taken by Copenhagen Pride — certainly, there’s room for a firmer stance — the reasoning some companies have cited for withdrawing their funding strikes a dissonant chord with me. It’s crucial to understand that calling Copenhagen Pride "too political" is a fundamental misinterpretation of its core mission. Pride, inherently, is political and about advocating for equality and human rights. It's a stance that should be championed, not shunned as overly political. The notion that an organization devoted to human rights should downplay its advocacy to appease corporate comfort is not only disappointing but also contradictory to the values of inclusion and respect. To the companies rethinking their support: disengaging may be your choice, but criticizing the moral compass of a human rights advocate as justification reveals a deeper disconnect. You don't ask other societal champions to mute their missions, so why should Copenhagen Pride? To Copenhagen Pride: Now more than ever, it's essential to focus on the core values of your organization. The work you do is crucial, continue to fight for human rights for EVERYONE, stand firm in your beliefs, and lead with courage. The path of advocacy is never easy, but it is always necessary. Let’s not dilute the messages that need to be heard. Instead, let’s stand firm, engage in constructive dialogue, and move forward with integrity. You can choose to support or not, but let's keep critiques constructive and missions clear. #CopenhagenPride #HumanRights #PrideMonth #Inclusion #Denmark #IDAHOBIT
