Razan Al Mubarak engaged with high-level leaders in Cali on Wednesday in support of the six-year race to restoration and to take forward the momentum built at #COP28 to put nature at the heart of actions for our future. The Restoration Day event was attended by ministers of Brazil, Colombia, Germany, representatives of UN Environment Programme, FAO, CBD and UNCCD Secretariat, and leading voices from Indigenous Peoples, academia and the private sector, highlighting that progress is urgently needed to achieve restoration targets. By 2030, 350 million hectares of degraded land need to be restored to safeguard the livelihoods of millions of people and potentially yield up to $9 trillion in ecosystem services to restore hope for a sustainable future. The restoration of 12 million hectares of native vegetation in this decade in Brazil through the national “Planaveg” was announced by the national government. Representatives of the African continent also announced initiatives to scale up restoration initiatives in the continent. Ministers and non-State actors leaders gathered at the “Thematic Ministerial Dialogue: Biodiversity and Climate Change” to discuss how to move from science to action. The event also marked the #COP16 Presidency’s contribution to the #Rio synergies agenda under the #RioTrio initiative and highlighted the legacy of #COP28 to strengthen the nature and climate agenda to achieve the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework and the #ParisAgreement.

IDOS at COP29 Azerbaijan 🌿 Yesterday’s official UNFCCC Side Event “High-Integrity Nature-Based Climate Action: Perspectives from the Global South” at #COP29 brought together researchers from York University, Radboud University, and IDOS, practitioners from the Fundação Grupo Boticário de Proteção à Natureza, and funders from Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) and Sitawi Finance for Good. The panel discussed ambition, equity, and the scaling of initiatives that integrate climate and biodiversity goals. IDOS expert Ines Katrin Dombrowsky shared insights from social science research at IDOS on Nature-based Solution (NbS) projects in Latin America. She emphasized that NbS are more likely to benefit local communities when they ensure distributional, procedural, and recognition justice, alongside establishing adequate governance arrangements for these communities. At the same time, she highlighted that ecosystem degradation is often driven not by poor local communities but by powerful economic and political actors. The discussion delved into the power dynamics associated with NbS and adaptation projects, as well as the opportunities and challenges in monitoring NbS outcomes and ensuring direct access to funding for local communities. | #COP29 #ClimateAction UN Climate Change #GlobalSouth

In this brief, he highlights the critical importance of both upcoming United Nations' biodiversity and climate negotiations in 2024. With the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Cali, Colombia, and the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, the year is pivotal for aligning global efforts to address the intertwined crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. As nations prepare to meet the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) targets and advance the Paris Agreement, the success of these conferences will hinge on bridging substantial finance gaps, achieving ambitious conservation goals like the 30x30, and ensuring inclusive participation, particularly from Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs). The outcomes from Cali and Baku could significantly influence global momentum leading up to COP30 in Brazil, marking a decade since the Paris Agreement's adoption. With the conclusion of #COP29Azerbaijan, the last week showcased transformative achievements. Key milestones included the launch of impactful initiatives addressing urbanisation, sustainable tourism, and water management, along with focused discussions on gender, transparency, and youth engagement. The #Bakubreakthrough with the new Baku Finance Goal and conclusion of Article 6 negotiations marked a monumental achievement to conclude #COP29. As I head off to Colombia for #COP16, I find myself reflecting on recent Global Nature Positive Summit. There were several key themes that I’m hoping will carry over into COP16, including the critical need to incorporate indigenous voices not just as participants, but as decision makers. Another key theme of the summit in Sydney, unsurprisingly, was the need for action. As delegates descend on Cali preparing for 2 weeks of discussions, panels, working groups and coffee chats, in the background WWF’s latest Living Planet report highlights the average size of wildlife populations has fallen by an appalling 73%. I sometimes find it hard to wrap my head around statistics like this, but what is abundantly clear is that our runway to bending the curve on biodiveristy loss is shrinking rapidly.   With COP16 being dubbed the “COP of implementation”, I’m hopeful that amidst all the talk we can take a breath, and prioritise action alongside dialogue.
