🌍 Strengthening Transboundary Water Cooperation in #SouthSudan 💧 South Sudan is grappling with severe challenges, including annual catastrophic floods, droughts, and substantial development and humanitarian issues. To tackle these challenges and promote sustainable growth, South Sudan is moving towards joining the United Nations #WaterConvention. 💦 During a national workshop on 18-19 July 2024 in Juba, South Sudan confirmed its intention to accelerate accession to this global agreement. The workshop, attended by over 80 participants from various sectors, highlighted the benefits, obligations, and next steps for joining the Convention. Earlier this week, African Water Facility hosted the Nordic Development Fund (NDF) and the Miinistry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark in Abidjan, to discuss progress of the Denmark-NDF funded joint program in the Sahel and Horn of Africa, and the development of the Facility’s upcoming strategy for 2026 - 2030. In 2021, Denmark, NDF and the African Water Facility launched the flagship program with 8 projects worth €34 million in five countries – Mali, Niger, Ethiopia, Somalia and Burkina Faso – to finance the provision of greener investments in water, sanitation, and water resources management activities in rural and urban areas of the selected countries and support COVID-19 recovery. To date, in-country projects have been initiated in three out of the five countries with approvals for the remaining two expected this year. The Facility’s new strategy for 2026 – 2030 will aim to cement its position as a cutting-edge agent for change and impact for African countries in responding to challenges in the continent’s rapidly evolving water and sanitation sector. On the back of this exchange, the Facility will commence consultations with stakeholders on the new strategy over the course of 2024 and early 2025. Sharing significant transboundary wetlands, experiencing annual catastrophic #floods and #droughts and facing immense #development and humanitarian challenges, South Sudan views strengthened transboundary cooperation as a pillar of its long-term recovery, sustainable #growth and regional integration. In this context, South Sudan confirmed during a recent national workshop its intention to accelerate the process of accession to the United Nations Water Convention, a unique global legal and intergovernmental framework for the sustainable management of transboundary #water resources, serviced by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. Dr. Osward M Chanda Chanda recent table talk with other organizations courtesy of UNIDO ITPO Germany on promoting water and wastewater management was truly enlightening. He shared a unique perspective that brings together the development bank's priorities with his experience in engaging with both public and private sectors. I was glad to be part of the meeting and listening to the wealth of information offered however it is clear that promoting private involvement in providing solutions to the public sector in Africa still faces significant challenges. There is still a gap in local banks offering incentives at a scale that promotes regional development, as well as a lack of shared information on practical regulatory frameworks. These are just some of the major hurdles that need to be addressed and thanks Belete A. Matebe from bringing that up in the discussion. We must continue to have conversations like these to find solutions that benefit all parties involved. Let's work together to overcome these challenges and promote #sustainable #water and #wastewater management in Africa.

The world's newest nation, #SouthSudan, is looking to join the United Nations #WaterConvention to strengthen water governance and #sustainabledevelopment opportunities. The Convention, which is serviced by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, constitutes a unique global legal and intergovernmental framework for the sustainable and peaceful management of transboundary water resources. South Sudan is situated in the middle of the basin of the #Nile River, Africa’s longest river. Sharing significant transboundary wetlands, experiencing annual catastrophic floods and droughts and facing immense #development and #humanitarian challenges, South Sudan views strengthened transboundary cooperation as a pillar of its long-term recovery, #sustainable growth and regional integration.  This further underscores the momentum towards accession to the UN Water Convention in Africa, with Cote d’Ivoire becoming the 10th Party in Africa and 53rd overall and then Zimbabwe became the 54th Party and 11th in Africa this month, joining Parties #Chad, #Senegal, #Ghana, #GuineaBissau, #Togo, #Cameroon, #Nigeria, #Namibia and #TheGambia. Since the global opening of the Convention to all UN Member States in 2016, 13 countries – including #Iraq and #Panama who became the first Parties in their respective regions in 2023 – have joined the Convention. Over 20 more are in the process of joining, the majority of which are in #Africa, including #Zambia and #SierraLeone, which are in the final stages of accession. In the East African Community, South Sudan’s co-riparians #Uganda (sharing the Nile River and Lake Victoria) and #Tanzania (sharing the Nile River) are currently in accession processes. Understanding the paradox of Water and Peace in the Somali Region of Ethiopia Did you know? In the Somali Region of Ethiopia, approximately 43% of the population lacks access to clean drinking water, fueling tensions and conflicts. (Source: UNICEF) According to recent data, 17 conflicts have erupted due to water scarcity in the region. (Source: International Crisis Group) The impact? It's devastating. Many families rely on agriculture, but erratic rainfall patterns and dwindling water sources lead to crop failures, pushing communities into displacement and migration. (Source: World Bank) But there's hope! The government, Local NGOs and international organizations are stepping up, implementing water management projects and fostering dialogue to promote peace. We need sustainable solutions! By investing in water infrastructure and promoting international cooperation, we can build resilience and pave the way for lasting peace in water-stressed regions. 📢 🌍 We have signed contracts for two new exciting projects in Moldova: The 𝗔𝗽𝗮𝗦𝗮𝗻𝟮𝟴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 project is a new initiative aimed at improving water and sanitation in rural Moldova, set to be completed in 2028 (hence the name ApaSan𝟮𝟴). Building on the successes of previous ApaSan projects, this new initiative funded with EUR 6 million by the Austrian Development Agency will enhance access to safe drinking water and sustainable decentralised sanitation systems and strengthen the capacity of operators and municipalities.    The project for 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗼𝘃𝗮 will support communities in Moldova to cope with the additional challenges resulting from the crisis caused by the Russian invasion in Ukraine, such as stress on water supply systems from increasing population and and soaring energy costs affecting budgets of municipalities and people.
