PICSA Training Workshop in Moroto, Uganda We are delighted to announce the successful completion of the Participatory Integrated Climate Services for Agriculture (PICSA) training workshop, held in partnership with IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) from 2nd to 5th December 2024 in Moroto, Uganda. This initiative is part of the UNDP-Africa Borderlands Centre's Area-Based Portfolio Programme, “Promoting Socio-Economic Development and Peace in the Karamoja Cross-Border Region (Uganda-Kenya).” The training aligns with all four pillars of the Karamoja Area-Based Portfolio Programme, equipping participants with tools to leverage both scientific climate forecasts and indigenous knowledge systems. Participants, including stakeholders from Uganda’s Amudat and Moroto districts and Kenya’s West Pokot sub-counties, gained insights into localized, participatory climate adaptation planning. Key outcomes of the workshop include: 1️⃣ Enhanced skills in using climate forecasts for informed decision-making. 2️⃣ Strengthened capacities to manage agricultural and pastoral value chains. 3️⃣ Empowerment through participatory decision-making tools. 4️⃣ Integration of scientific and indigenous knowledge for context-specific resilience. 5️⃣ Cross-border collaboration for harmonized climate interventions. This training represents a step forward in addressing the multidimensional vulnerabilities of the Karamoja Cluster, fostering community-driven resilience, socio-economic development, and peacebuilding. Reflecting on an impactful 3-day journey at the Youth Iteration of the Climate, Peace, and Security Experts Academy for Youth, hosted by UNDP Africa Resilience Hub in Nairobi! The Youth Iteration of the Climate, Peace & Security Experts Academy seeks to strengthen the capacities of young professionals, fostering knowledge exchange, leadership development, and advocacy for integrated CPS approaches. The event brought together passionate young leaders, experts, and stakeholders from over 20 countries to explore innovative solutions at the intersection of climate action, peacebuilding, and security. Here are some of the highlights: Day 1: Focused on understanding the complex challenges of climate-related security risks and how youth can play a key role in addressing them through local and global solutions. Day 2: Dived into youth-friendly communication strategies, inspiring stories from the field, and meaningful discussions on how to amplify youth voices in climate and peace action. Day 3: Concluded with participant-led discussions, multi-stakeholder roundtables, and practical sessions on creating enabling environments for youth empowerment. We also explored emerging areas like human mobility, oceans, and gender in relation to climate security. Exciting breakthroughs in groundwater exploration! The Somali Regional State of Ethiopia has requested UNDP Africa to conduct a technical mission aimed at identifying and analyzing fresh groundwater resources in the Horn of Africa's sandstone formations. By combining indigenous knowledge with cutting-edge scientific methods, we are finding groundwater that is fresh—not salty—bringing new hope to communities in borderlands regions where water scarcity has long been a challenge. These resources will support critical activities such as agriculture, livestock trade, and the resilience of communities that depend on these industries. This mission is a key part of the UNDP Africa Freshwater Offer, an initiative dedicated to unlocking sustainable water solutions across the continent. It also contributes to the development of the Groundwater Access Facility (GaFa), which is set to revolutionize water management in the Sahel and the Horn of Africa by focusing on data-driven strategies and community engagement. Progress on the Groundwater Access Facility (GAFa) in the Horn of Africa 💧🌍 As part of our ongoing efforts on the Groundwater Access Facility, we had a strategic meeting with the President of the Somali State of Ethiopia, Mustafe Omer, and his team in Jigjiga, Ethiopia. The discussion was centered around advancing sustainable water management solutions crucial for the region's future. In addition, we conducted an on-the-spot assessment at the Somalia Regional State Water Bureau workshop in Jijiga. Led by the UNDP Resilience Hub Director Dr. Zeynu Ummer, this assessment focused on strengthening institutional capacity to ensure the successful implementation of GAFa. This week, the Africa Borderlands Centre (ABC), in collaboration with our dedicated partners UNDP KENYA, UNDP Uganda and IGAD is advancing our Regional Portfolio programme with an integrated assessment along the Kenya-Uganda border. Our journey started in Kacheliba, West Pokot County, Kenya, where we conducted Focus Group Discussions and Key Informant Interviews with borderland communities. These sessions have been instrumental in gaining a deeper understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within these border regions. We’ve now moved to the Karamoja Sub-region of Uganda, continuing our efforts to gather insights that will shape impactful interventions. This work is crucial in driving sustainable development, peacebuilding, and resilience in borderlands, ensuring that these often-overlooked regions receive the attention and resources they deserve.
