Breast feeding in refugee context: a scoping review https://lnkd.in/enKbaXmk To map in the scientific literature the extent to which forced international migration changes the practice of breastfeeding. Method: Scoping review where the guiding question was: "Does forced international migration change the practice of breastfeeding in refugee women?" and searches were carried out between December 2018 and March 2019 in the databases: LILACS, MEDLINE, SciElo, BDEFN, Scopus and PubMed Central. Results: 8 studies were selected for the review. After the thematic analysis, 4 thematic categories emerged: knowledge versus breastfeeding practice; cultural and religious trends; performance of health services; and barriers to the practice of breastfeeding in resettlement. Conclusion: Forced migration alters the practice of breastfeeding in refugees, being intensified as a socio, ideological and culturally learned practice, or seen as primitive and non-normative conditioned to the destination country. #Breast feeding, #Refugees, #Human migration, #Involutary

Today, the world population has surpassed 8 billion, with Nigeria being the most populous country in Africa, housing over 220 million people. Rapid population growth presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly in health and economic development. Family planning plays a vital role in addressing some of these challenges. By providing accessible and affordable family planning and reproductive health commodities and services, DKT Nigeria ensures that individuals and couples have access to a wide range of contraceptives to help them plan their families. Through media and educational campaigns and community outreaches, we raise awareness about family planning and reproductive health, empowering people with the knowledge to make informed choices and ensuring no one is left behind. Our capacity-building initiatives and collaboration with healthcare providers, clinics, and other partners enhance the availability and quality of family planning and reproductive health services. At DKT Nigeria, we envision a world where every pregnancy is wanted. By promoting family planning, we aim to reduce unintended pregnancies, improve maternal and child health, and lower maternal mortality rates. Happy World Population Day from DKT Nigeria! #WorldPopulationDay #FamilyPlanning #ReproductiveHealth #SustainableDevelopment #DKTNigeria #Exploringbeyondborders

On International Pregnancy Loss and Remembrance Day, Associate Professor Miranda Davies-Tuck from the Stillbirth CRE was interviewed by Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio National Drive to discuss this important topic. Every day around 6 babies are stillborn in Australia resulting in over 2000 families each year experiencing this tragedy. The urgency of addressing this issue is greater than ever. The National Stillbirth Action and Implementation Plan targets reducing the number of stillborn babies beyond 28 weeks gestation by 20% by the end of 2025. Significant strides have been made with the Stillbirth CRE’s Safer Baby Bundle, now implemented in over 160 hospitals, to improve antenatal care practices and outcomes. We are seeing improvements across some jurisdictions. Tragically stillbirth rates in First Nations, and some migrant and refugee communities are nearly double those of the general population. As Miranda highlighted, "Migrant and refugee communities are incredibly diverse, often facing significant barriers to accessing and engaging in care." The Stillbirth CRE is very focused on the cultural adaptation of the Safer Baby Bundle evidence-based resources. The Stronger Bubba Born (First Nations) and Growing a Healthy Baby (migrant and refugee) resources have been co-designed with members of these communities to ensure they are culturally safe and translations are appropriate. Listen to the full 8-minute interview https://lnkd.in/grbMpEMG Migrant and refugee resources are available here: https://lnkd.in/dQsiH7cR First Nations resources are available here: strongerbubbaborn.org.au/ The Safer Baby Bundle resources and information is available here: saferbaby.org.au/ We'll continue working hard with our partners, clinicians, community groups and Government to reduce the number of stillbirths.

Despite remarkable progress in women and children's health worldwide, millions still suffer or die from preventable causes during pregnancy, childbirth and early childhood. Over the last four years, World Relief has been addressing the barriers to quality health care for women and babies in Haiti, Kenya, Malawi and South Sudan through the USAID-funded SCOPE project. Our vision was to strengthen primary health care and make reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health care more accessible at the community level. In order to bring this vision to life, we harnessed the collective power faith leaders, community groups and community health workers to reach more women with the information they needed to care for themselves and their children. Today, we’re sharing a full report detailing our successes and our learnings through SCOPE. We invite you to explore the detailed final report, a testament to the transformative power of community-led initiatives. Together, we’re creating sustainable solutions to some of the world's greatest challenges in some of the hardest-to-reach areas. In response, our foundation conducted a survey in 2023 to assess the accessibility of gender-based case management, healthcare services (including maternal and sexual reproductive health), and community needs across 54 communities in Upper Banyang sub division, Manyu Division. Key Findings: · The entire division lacks a well-equipped hospital and a clear healthcare roadmap for over 100 communities. Inhabitants often seek healthcare in the Northwest region, Meme Division, or Buea (230 km away) during emergencies. · Only one government preventive health center operates in Mamfe, the divisional headquarters, with limited resources to serve a population exceeding 250,000. · Access to antenatal services (ANC) is severely restricted due to the closure or destruction of health centers. · Women and girls deliver at home with assistance from traditional birth attendants lacking proper midwifery training. · Children born between 2016 and 2024 lack access to essential vaccinations and malaria treatment, contributing to high child mortality rates. · Gender-based violence services are nonexistent, with limited awareness about harmful practices like female genital mutilation and child marriage in certain communities. #gbvinconflictareas #Publichealthemergency #malaria #Data #research #SRHR Share-Net International Women in Global Health Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance GBVF Response Fund1
