This year's #16DaysofActivism Against #GenderBasedViolence highlights the urgent need for quality data to combat Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) – a global pandemic and grave #humanrights violation. To address this gap, #IamAPHRC and the Population Council in Kenya, through the Spotlight Initiative Africa Regional Programme, offer a self-paced online course to strengthen skills in collecting, analyzing, and using VAWG data to inform policies and programs. Through this course, participants: ✅ Learn to design rigorous research on VAWG ✅ Analyze and utilize data to drive policy change ✅ Monitor progress on SDG indicators like GBV and Sexual Reproductive Health ✅ Build coordination and partnerships for VAWG solutions The course is offered in English and French and has 10 regionally contextualized modules. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate! #EndVAWG #GBV #DataForChange #APHRCResearch #WeAreAfrica

Yesterday I met "people". The African Population and Health Research Center team was out in force at a reception to celebrate 60 years of Wellcome Trust partnerships in Kenya. I was particularly delighted to meet Julia Gillard - former PM of Australia and the Chair of Wellcome. I also met H.E. Musalia Mudavadi for the first time. It was a very busy evening of networking and celebrating 60 years of investment in research and science in Kenya. We greatly appreciate the partnership with Wellcome Trust in developing new areas of work and maintaining others around mental health, climate and its health impacts, research capacity strengthening among others. Wellcome is a top APHRC funder and APHRC is a top grantee of the foundation in Kenya 🤝 Here's to many years of impactful investment in science in Kenya #WeAreAfrica #IamAPHRC Agnes Kiragga Elizabeth Kimani-Murage Dr. Estelle Monique Sidze Sylvia Kiwuwa Damazo Kadengye Anthony Mveyange Lukoye Atwoli, M.B.S., MBChB, MMed Psych, PhD, IFAPA Dr Margaret Nampijja Samuel Iddi, PhD Alice Karanja Andre Pascal Kengne Mamadou Diarafa Diallo Ben Agina

Today was an amazing day. We at African Population and Health Research Center hosted Till Barnighausen Bärnighausen, the head of the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health at Heidelberg University - my Alma mater. It was a full day of discussions, learning about each other's work and finding areas of collaboration. There are numerous areas of synergy in our institutional strategies around mental health, adolescent health, NCDs, implementation research, design science, capacity strengthening.... among others. It was a very enriching experience learning about the incredible work the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health is doing, the vision, strategy and the potential for a mutually beneficial partnerships in numerous areas of work. It was also a proud moment, coming full cycle from my days at Heidelberg University as a graduate student to a leader of an institution considered a strategic partner for my alma mater. Next up: lots of additional group-specific discussions, joint ideation, joint grant applications, joint projects and a reciprocal visit some time next year! I am really really excited to see what this partnership will bring. #WeAreAfrica #IamAPHRC Mamadou Diarafa Diallo Elizabeth Kimani-Murage Agnes Kiragga Abdhalah Ziraba Anthony Mveyange Florah Karimi Caroline Kabiru Andre Pascal Kengne Daniel Mwanga Tatenda Duncan Kavu

Over the past two days, #IamAPHRC’s Human Development team convened researchers, educators, advocates, and policymakers to champion inclusion for individuals with disabilities. Highlights of the workshop included: ✅ Outlining policy gaps in special needs and sexual education for adolescents with intellectual disabilities. ✅ Identifying action areas for disability-inclusive education, healthcare, and caregiving policies. ✅ Establishment of a technical working group to translate research into impactful interventions. Thank you to all stakeholders for your insights and dedication to equity and inclusion. The Center remains committed to ensuring that no one is left behind in pursuing knowledge, opportunity, and dignity for all. #InclusionMatters #WeAreAfrica #APHRCResearch

“Kenya’s agri-food sector includes diverse actors, including 47 county governments, the national government, a large private sector, farmers and civil society organizations, academia, and development partners. While this diversity can yield a wide variety of proposed solutions, it can impede progress due to conflicts of interest and contradictory approaches…” We are proud to endorse the Pathways to Enhanced Coordination among Food Systems Actors in Kenya policy brief by TMG Think Tank for Sustainability, which highlights strategies to address these challenges., which highlights actionable strategies to address these challenges. It is the period of awareness again for effort against Gender based violence-The #sixteendaysofactivismagainstgenderbasedviolence. This years' campaign has been unprecedented with an increasing recognition of the role of Men in ending #SGBV. We just had an impactful International Men’s Day conference hosted by Strathmore University and Strathmore Business School (SBS) centered on fostering #PositiveMaleRoleModels, and highlighting the transformative role men can play in advancing gender equality in health leadership. During the sessions, Prof Frank Wafula and African Population and Health Research Center 's Anthony Mveyange gave lead speeches on the topical issue. In another event our very own AMREF 's CEO and President Dr. Githinji Gitahi was receiving commendation for the Male Champion Award at the 2024 Women on Boards Network Awards for his efforts in Gender Equality Standing on the shoulders of these industry giants, I can not but remember an article I penned sometimes on the role of mentorship in ending femicide that is now again on the rise in Kenya( https://lnkd.in/dCHyRZcu) Over the remaining 15 days, join me in highlighting why male mentorship and male allyship are powerful tools in ending SGBV. Day 2: Men can help prevent intimate partner violence by actively challenging harmful gender norms, promoting respectful communication, and modeling healthy relationships. By using their influence to foster equality and accountability, men can play a key role in breaking the cycle of violence and supporting survivors.
