Suntory Holdings' President, Takashi Shinagawa, shared insights into the company's future overseas strategy during an interview with the Nikkei. He expressed plans to establish India as a hub for production, enabling the export of products to other countries and regions. He is considering partnerships with local alcoholic beverage manufacturers as part of this initiative.
The remarks were made during the Triangular Committee's general assembly, held in Brussels from September 21 to 23, where politicians and business leaders from Asia, North America, and Europe gathered. Suntory's overseas sales accounted for about 50% of its total revenue for the fiscal year ending December 2023, highlighting the significance of its international operations.
Shinagawa noted India's growing population and expanding drinking culture as promising factors for future growth. However, he acknowledged the challenges posed by high tariffs on alcoholic beverages in the country. Currently, Suntory is focused on blending whiskey in India, with future plans to eventually handle distillation. This would allow the company to export to regions such as the Middle East and East Africa.
He also mentioned the emergence of local manufacturers capable of producing malt whiskey in India, stating, "If we provide technical support, we can secure high-quality products." To advance this strategy, he emphasized the search for partnerships with local companies, including potential investment opportunities.
