Given that there are around 10m tonnes of leaves falling on the ground in the UK every year, perhaps using leaves as a biomass fuel would be a far better option than spending £22bn on Carbon Capture and Storage. The UK could offset between 20m to 30m tonnes of CO2 every year at around £30/tonne of carbon. As we grapple with decarbonisation, bioenergy (energy derived from harvested trees and other plants) is often put on the table as an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels. But is it environmentally sound? The annoying answer is: it depends. Trees and other plants soak up carbon from the atmosphere and store it as biomass. When they are burnt for electricity production, the same carbon is released. This would suggest bioenergy is “carbon-neutral”. But it’s not that simple. Many things can change the environmental credentials of a bioenergy project. Every project is unique and must be considered independently. #bioenergy #decarbonisation

🌍Exploring carbon credit business models for biomass-based companies: a case study with Bloom Biorenewables 🌍 In response to the increasing global CO2 levels, companies are actively engaged in efforts to mitigate global warming. Despite their innovative approaches, these businesses often face additional financial considerations in developing breakthrough technologies. One possible solution to this issue could be the Carbon Credit Market. In collaboration with Bloom Biorenewables, the team of students from the MSc in Sustainable Management and Technology Ana Cristina Vides Gómez, Charlotte Luise Ahrens, Lara Yasmin Hunziker, and Per Christian Wessel aimed to find out whether it is viable for Bloom to claim carbon credits for the emission reductions they achieve by replacing the petroleum-based inputs from conventional processes with biomass. 👉 Key Findings: 1️⃣ Negative Emissions Potential: Bloom could claim negative emissions for certain products, depending on the chosen allocation method. However, it's crucial to remember that these are offset by higher emissions in other co-products. 2️⃣ Carbon Market Analysis: High growth, yet high uncertainty is expected for the Carbon Market. The source of biomass is crucial for carbon credit eligibility. 3️⃣ Financial Viability: The team’s financial model suggests positive revenues from carbon credits, in the worst, base and best case scenario. 🌿 Conclusion: Integrating carbon credits into Bloom’s business model offers promising opportunities to increase their revenues. On a large scale, carbon credits might thus support the transition away from petroleum-based products and towards lower-emission alternatives. 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐎𝟐 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞? Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) is a process where CO2 is captured and stored while energy is created from biomass. Because plants absorb CO2 as they grow, this process effectively creates negative carbon emissions 📉 More of these projects are needed in order to meet global climate ambitions. So we’re happy to announce our agreement with Ørsted to purchase 330,000 carbon dioxide removal credits (330,000 tonnes of CO2) over a period of 10 years in connection with their Avedøre combined heat and power plant near Copenhagen. The plant utilises sustainable biomass from waste straw as a feedstock. The CO2 captured from the power station will be transported overland to Ørsted’s CO2 hub in Kalundborg, Denmark, before further transportation to the Northern Lights CO2 storage facility offshore Norway for permanent storage under the North Sea seabed 🇩🇰🇳🇴 We are developing the Northern Lights project together with Shell and TotalEnergies. While we see carbon credits as an important way to stimulate investments in carbon reduction and removal activities, at least 90% of our scope 1 and 2 emissions reductions towards 2030 will stem from measures taken in our own operations in areas including production, transport and shipping. Biomass and Pyrolysis Technology: Modern pyrolysis methods enhance biomass energy conversion efficiency, reducing carbon emissions while producing carbon-neutral biochar and biofuels. 3. Carbon Monitoring & Digital Supply Chain Management: Digital systems and AI-driven tools can track and minimize the carbon footprint of every step in the supply chain, helping businesses adopt greener practices. 4. Certification & Incentives: Governments and the private sector can promote sustainable wood and biomass products through certifications and economic policies, like carbon tax benefits and direct subsidies for green energy initiatives. --- A Call to Action: Ignoring the environmental impact of traditional practices will accelerate climate change and make resource renewal more difficult. Governments, businesses, and the public need to pay more attention to modernizing wood and biomass processing technologies. The positive impact of biomass energy on carbon emissions could be significant, but only with the right management in place. We must invest in technology to minimize environmental damage caused by outdated methods. Forests are depleting, carbon emissions are increasing, and energy efficiency remains low.
