It has now been almost a month since the alumni meeting of our EC²/BIG-NSE doctoral program. It was a great two days and we would like to thank all those responsible and all participants for the wonderful time together!! Around 40 alumni came together at TU Berlin and actively participated in several panel discussions. Most panels featured alumni from a range of career paths - academic, industrial and beyond - who shared insights about their current roles, the paths they took to reach them, and the challenges faced in their careers post-PhD. The insights they shared were very inspiring! It has been a pleasure to meet, chat, network and enjoy the time together :) A very big thank you also to the organizer of the event and managing director of EC²/BIG-NSE Jean-Philippe Lonjaret! It's fantastic how you bind the scholarship holders together through activities, events and ultimately your manner, how you create a great group feeling and strengthen the community. And then you also keep in touch with the alumni - amazing! Thanks for coming! Now let's look to the future together ;) EC²/BIG-NSE supports PhD education by recruiting and supporting excellent PhD students from all over the world. The mission of the graduate school is to overcome the frontiers of classical disciplines in catalysis. To build a cloud service as a degree project, is that possible? If you ask the two Computer Engineering students, Pierre Le Fèvre and Emil Karlsson, they would say yes! They have developed the concept and can now offer both students and researchers at Kungliga Tekniska högskolan in Flemingsberg the opportunity to run their software projects on the cloud. The KTH Cloud service began as a discussion between teachers Jonas Willén and Reine Bergström and computer engineering students Pierre Le Fèvre and Emil Karlsson about the idea of a "software makers' space." It became a degree project for Emil and Pierre under the supervision of Harsha Krishna, a PhD student at the Department of Health Informatics and Logistics. "Pierre and Emil are extremely talented and built the whole system very quickly. Jonas, Reine, and I are now expanding our ideas around the software maker space to explore how to use the cloud for healthcare research," says Harsha Krishna, their supervisor. At EC3, we are dedicated to empowering researchers to become leaders in their fields. This commitment drives us to organize workshops where experienced and seasoned researchers share their knowledge and insights with the emerging talents in computing in construction. At the 2024 EC3 Conference, we hosted two such initiatives. 1 : Workshop on How to Become an Effective Author of Highly-Ranked, Peer-Reviewed Scholarly Journal Papers: A practical workshop for junior researchers, led by Prof. Mirosław J. Skibniewski, a 30-year-long veteran editor-in-chief of a top-ranking international research journal focused on construction IT and related technologies. This workshop was designed for junior faculty, doctoral students, and research associates in engineering and sciences. The following issues were addressed: how to select the best journal, design essential components of a successful paper, optimize paper structure for expedited review, and communicate effectively with editorial offices and peer reviewers. It also covered selecting effective interpreters and utilizing bibliometrics to the author's advantage. 2. Research Mentoring Roundtables: Early Career Researcher Mentoring Roundtable with esteemed experts Ioannis Brilakis, Raimar Scherer, and Iva Kovacic, providing valuable guidance and insights to junior researchers. These roundtables offered a platform for rising stars in computing in construction to engage directly with seasoned researchers, discuss their challenges, and receive personalized advice. Call for Abstracts: ESP-HPC: Ethical, Social, and Policy Issues in High Performance Computing https://lnkd.in/gsQzJAHv ESP-HPC is intended to start discussions among many disciplines not typically associated with the Supercomputing community. Scholars in the social sciences and humanities are particularly encouraged to submit their work with regard to HPC. The ideal abstract should be broadly accessible to an educated audience. The ethical, social, or policy issues concerned should be the central focus of the abstract. If accepted, submitters will have 20 minutes to give a talk with the expectation a significant portion of this time will be spent leading a thought-provoking discussion with attendees. Though we invite submissions from all disciplines investigating ethical, social, or policy issues in HPC, the following topics are of particular interest for ESP-HPC: Access issues in HPC (equity, policy, …) Costs of HPC (energy, environmental, monetary, political) Legal issues in HPC HPC public policy Epistemology of simulations (scientific codes) Philosophy of science and HPC AI/ML in HPC (ethical, social) Important Dates and Information Abstracts are limited to 750 words, not including references.

Collaborating with Macquarie University on its #digitaltransformation journey has been a hugely enriching experience. The digital journey began with cloud migration, a crucial step in modernising the university's #ITinfrastructure. This move has not only laid foundation to further their modernisation efforts but also streamlined the IT infrastructure, reduced complexity and significantly enhanced the university's resilience and cost efficiency. One of the most rewarding aspects of this transformation has been the approach towards it. By truly understanding the university's needs, we ensured every step aligned with the larger purpose and goals, driving meaningful and sustainable change. Modernisation is a non-linear process and needs constant iterations, which again is possible through maximum collaboration. It has really been amazing of Jonathan Covell and his team for their great partnership all along. Jonathan has rightly put it in this Forbes Australia article, Digital Transformation is often cyclical. Tapping into #AI will only make modernization faster, driving a wealth of change that everyone can benefit from, right experience at the right time.
