Today, ASLM participated in the Biosafety and Biosecurity (BSBS) Regional Technical Working Group (TWG) annual meeting in Lusaka, Zambia. The meeting aimed to review progress in implementing the #BSBS Initiative, share best practices, and discuss plans for 2025. During the event, Dr Talkmore Maruta, ASLM's Director of Programs, emphasized the importance of establishing organized in-country structures, such as the multisectoral National #BSBS TWG, to ensure effective coordination and avoid duplication of efforts. Mr. Donewell Bangure, an Epidemiologist at Africa CDC, informed participants that preparations for the 2026–2030 BSBS Regional Strategy are already underway. Regional consultations are planned to identify priorities for consideration in the strategy.

Zimbabwe participated in the Biosafety and Biosecurity Regional Technical Working Group (TWG) annual meeting in Lusaka, Zambia from 26-28th November 2024. Zimbabwe set up its multi-sectorial National TWG on Biosafety and Biosecurity in September 2023. The TWG is responsible for spearheading the establishment, coordination, monitoring, and evaluation of the implementation of the Biosafety and Biosecurity activities in Zimbabwe. #Biosafety #Biosecurity

Egypt FETP Strengthens One Health Approach! Egypt FETP recently held a high-level meeting on April 15, 2024 with key stakeholders from the #WHO country office, WHO regional office, #FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), and #EMPHNET to discuss an exciting program development! The meeting focused on exploring the possibility of creating a new specialized track on #OneHealth. This innovative track aims to expand the program's reach by incorporating diverse specialties and fostering collaboration among various stakeholders. By training a workforce with a One Health approach, the program strives to: - Develop high-quality training modules leveraging the existing FETP framework. - Equip graduates with the expertise to spearhead Egypt's national One Health strategy. - Ultimately protect the health of people, animals, and the environment in Egypt. KENAS in the News: Advancing Healthcare in Rwanda KENAS was recently featured on Rwandan television station RTV following the presentation of ceremonial accreditation certificates to 4 medical laboratories in Rwanda, accredited to ISO 15189:2012. This accreditation marks a significant milestone for the health sector in the country. The Main Benefit? Patients no longer need to undergo retesting abroad which previously was the case. Results from these accredited medical laboratories are recognized globally, ensuring that medical care is not only accurate but also cost-effective. 🔈🔈 This November, the coordinating Minister of Health and Social Care, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate announced the provision of free caesarean section to eligible women through MAMII (Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiatives) during the recently concluded maiden edition of Nigeria’s 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫-𝐖𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 (JAR). A recent study which I led, “Prevalence, indications, and complications of caesarean section in health facilities across Nigeria: a systematic review and meta-analysis” highlighted higher prevalence of emergency caesarean sections across the country and significant geographical heath inequities in caesarean section. It is my hope that this is one huge step in the right direction, as we learn more about the technicalities of MAMII’s approach. 💡Research Spotlight💡 Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) still struggle to put into place effective IPC programmes. In this paper, researchers from Texila American University - Guyana, Universidad Central de Nicaragua UCN, World Health Organization, Douala University, the Cameroon Ministry of Health and others use a socioecological approach to summarize the findings of a recent workshop on the implementation of IPC activities in Cameroon. Cameroon does not have an effective IPC programme in place but has developed some areas of the WHO IPC core components across the guideline level, the individual level, the organizational level, and the political level. However, Cameroon is still far from the norms and standards laid out by the WHO.
