💡 It has been a few weeks since our colleague Fabio Rodriguez Santiago, mba attended the EIT Health Summit 2024 in Rotterdam, but we are still benefiting from all the learnings and connections that came from such a great gathering. The summit hosted over 400 healthcare innovators from across Europe, providing a robust platform for discussion about the future of life sciences. 🔍 Our key takeaways were: ◾Innovation in Healthcare: The summit reinforced the critical need for continuous innovation in healthcare systems to adapt to the evolving needs of patients and providers. ◾Digital Skills: With AI and data analytics advancing rapidly, there is a heightened demand for digital literacy among healthcare professionals. ◾Funding in Healthcare: Discussions highlighted the importance of closing the funding gap, with strategic investments needed to foster research and development. ◾Collaboration is Key: The synergy between large corporations and agile startups is paving the way for accelerated product development and market strategies, showcasing the power of partnership. EIT Health Ireland-UK , a Co-location Centre of EIT Health, which is part of the EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology, recently announced that Dundalk Institute of Technology has joined as a Network Partner. EIT Health is Europe’s largest health innovation network made up of 150 world-class partner organisations. EIT Health connects Partner academic institutions with start-ups, hospitals, pharmaceutical and medtech companies, government agencies, investors, and research bodies, to develop new ideas and inventions to advance health systems for the benefit of patients in Europe. DkIT currently leads several ongoing health-focused initiatives. The Connected Health & Wellbeing Cluster merges the latest technologies in e-health, m-health and telehealth, with established healthcare solutions. DkIT also hosts a number of health-related R&D centres including Netwell Centre who support active and healthy ageing initiatives, and the Regulated Software Research Centre who lead a number of initiatives on Medical Device regulations. Additionally DConnect is Ireland’s first dedicated digital health innovation hub, committed to driving collaboration in the burgeoning sector of digital health. Collaborations between start-ups, established companies, academia, and governments can drive impactful solutions and accelerate progress. 🔄 Resilient Healthcare Systems: Building resilience in healthcare systems was a key theme. The importance of preparedness for future disruptions, such as pandemics or climate-related challenges, cannot be overstated. 🤝 Strengthening International Collaboration: Global collaboration emerged as a priority. By sharing best practices and resources across borders, we can address common healthcare challenges more effectively. 📅 Setting Agendas for Action: Day Two highlighted the urgency of setting actionable agendas. Concrete steps and timelines are essential to translating ideas into tangible outcomes. 👥 Empowering Healthcare Workforce: Discussions underscored the need to empower and support healthcare professionals. Investing in workforce training and well-being is crucial for sustainable healthcare delivery. 🌍 Advancing Digital Health Equity: The summit emphasised the importance of ensuring equitable access to digital health technologies. Bridging the digital divide is essential for inclusive healthcare.  🤖 Governing AI in Europe: We also explored the implications of the EU AI Act in a dedicated session. This brought together AI experts and industry leaders to discuss the balance between regulation and innovation. Attendees examined the potential impact on European companies and start-ups, pondering whether the new law would hinder or propel innovation in Europe. Jean-Marc Bourez, CEO of EIT Health, captured the spirit of collaboration at the summit, stating: "We at EIT Health excel in creating synergies by fostering a culture of collaboration, where different types of innovators unite to address problems together, ultimately driving impactful and transformative change in healthcare. We're one of nine partners across seven EU countries, and two Horizon Europe-associated nations, supporting the UNITE project💡 The new programme will activate open calls for proposals to cascade funding to highly innovative European companies in the digital health sector.
