The latest blog in our series ‘Iran in transition' analyses how the death of President Raisi influences Supreme Leader Khamenei’s intention to advance Iran’s revolutionary project. 𝗜𝗻 𝗮 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹 🔵 Supreme Leader Khamenei’s ‘Second Step of the Revolution’ of 2019 laid out a path towards a new Islamic civilization for Iran’s revolutionary project. However, this vision is at odds with the desire of much of Iran’s population for a free and democratic country. 🔵 Implementation of this ‘Second Step’ has gone hand in hand with weakening republican elements in Iranian governance, appointing hardline loyalists, forming a new revolutionary generation and brutally repressing dissent. 🔵 President Raisi’s recent death sparks new competition between hardline, traditional and pragmatic conservatives, thus increasing the risk of the power struggle that Khamenei intended to avoid. ⤵ Read more

Moment of TRUTH✔Important historical moment ✔Which governments won’t implement the rulings of the ICC? “There's something bigger here than just the question of the ICC with Israel abiding or not abiding by it. I think that's a moment of truth for the international tribunals such as the ICC and the ICJ because they would face ✔governments that would not probably implement the rulings because Israel still has very strong allies and I think the rest of the world especially the global South would watch to see whether the terms universal and international really means something and so I think Palestine is just one case of many in which we have now a real struggle to ✔define again ✔what is universal, what are ✔universal values and what is ✔international Justice and I think that's why it's such an important historical moment”. In our latest '#Iran in transition' blog, Shukriya Bradost shines a helpful light on the struggle of the #Kurds in the context of 'woman-life-freedom': https://bit.ly/477LEVe Hamidreza Azizi The Clingendael Institute (1) Kurdish opposition parties in Iran fight their struggle for greater rights mostly by civic means. They aim for local self-governance while remaining part of Iran (2) Tehran’s ruling elites nevertheless frame them as separatists and threats to the state. Such discursive securitization is effective among other Iranian (diaspora) opposition groups (3) But the economic and political marginalization of Iran’s Kurdish regions ensures ethnicity remains a potent mobilizer of dissent. Paradoxically, its continued suppression risks fragmentation of the state in the future
