Soon enough, you’ll have your spaces filled with both new and old customers. However, It is one thing to receive the customers and another thing to keep them. They say the beauty of a woman can take her to her husbands house, but only her character can keep her—na they say I talk o,Lol. This is synonymous to the fact that most of the persons coming to your space may be doing so only because of the ambiance, what would bring them back is the quality of your service, and this has more to do with the people involved in rendering the services. A different take on the “Elevator Pitch.” Ever wonder how your favourite restaurant or hotel remembers who you are (even if you’re not famous)? A good friend of mine, Michael Lucas, who was the GM at the St James’s Club in the 1980s, had an amazing way of connecting with his regular guests. I was in his office discussing a management issue that I was there to help him resolve when the phone rang. He took the call and then invited me to come along with him. We went to the elevator; his office was in the basement, and he called the lift. When the lift arrived, we got in, and he held the door open for a few moments, pushed the button for the top floor, let the door go, and the lift went up to reception. The doors opened, and a newly arrived guest walked in. Michael and the guest chatted away like old friends. He asked about their family, trip, and other stuff and even introduced me. When we arrived at the guest’s floor, the guest got out and was taken to his room by the porter. We then continued to the next floor, pressed the basement button, and returned to his office. The guest was Dudley Moore, a regular visitor. The interaction was natural, and Dudley Moore felt welcomed without it being awkward. As far as he knew, the meeting was pure happenstance and a pleasant experience. Michael made a few notes on his roller dex, and then we continued our meeting. Michael had a system - a simple system that had reception call him when any of his regular guests were checking in. He knew they would be coming in advance, had checked his previous notes, and then would “bump into the guest” when they arrived. He would then add some notes and wait for the next visit. His whole team was tuned into the process, so he always got a “chance” to bump into his regular guests and make them feel welcome. Hospitality is about making guests feel welcome, safe and comfortable. When that happens, our guests have a memorable experience, and they always want to return. We focus on what matters to us, on what we value as important. So, what happens when we misvalue something in business and don’t realise how much this costs us? Sadly, I see this a lot in Hospitality. Lots of attention is given to the minutest service detail while at the same time overlooking the importance of kindness, generosity, and fun. I may ruffle a few feathers here, but in years of being in the industry and with my fair share of going out, I know that hospitality equals service (if not surpasses it in many situations) and needs the same attention. ·     A guest will forgive a delay in the kitchen when the response is filled with authentic hospitality. ·     A colleague will forget a stressful response from a manager when they show their vulnerability afterwards. ·     A wrong order will result in a decision to return to the venue when the mistake is handled with honesty and appreciation. ·     A chef will support their FOH colleague when they share the same hospitality ethos. ·     A smile often means more than the most accomplished dish. When your hospitality firm calls, the first part of the discussion should not jump immediately to cost. This tells us that you are no vested interest in your patron safety and the person who is in charge of coordinating has no regard for your operations. --- Do you need a facility restarted after being shut down by the state, then the discussion should be, "How do we avoid this again." not "I just need to get it going." ---- #hospitality -------- This is why staff turn over is so great.
