About us
The shocking truth is that men, women, and children are sold for sex and forced into slave labor in and around Orlando. Florida Abolitionist is rebuilding the lives of victims and preventing more people from being exploited in order to stop human trafficking. Florida Abolitionist is unique in its vision of ending human trafficking of all forms within the United States. Many organizations are tirelessly fighting human trafficking on an international scale but there is so much work to be done right here in the U.S. Despite increased media attention and legislative efforts, human trafficking remains pervasive in the U.S. FA is dedicated to addressing the crimes in “our own backyard” of Orlando and the surrounding region. Florida Abolitionist (FA) is a non-governmental 501(c)3 organization established to campaign against modern-day slavery. FA’s approach is a focused strategy to educate, equip, and empower the community to action. Tomas J. Lares, the Founder and Executive Director of FA began his journey in 2004 when he learned about human trafficking. Even though Lares began his involvement in the anti-human trafficking movement in 2004 it was not until 2009 that he met with a group of modern-day abolitionists who became FA’s steering committee. Together they came up with the vision, mission, and objectives of Florida Abolitionist. Just like individuals of compassion that stood against slavery more than 150 years ago, the time has come once again to shout, “NOT ON MY WATCH!“

Survivors of human trafficking often escape with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Finding a safe and trusted place to stay is the first step toward rebuilding their lives. Tomas Lares has worked with the state of Florida to develop the nation’s first certification standards to open a safe house, ensuring survivors have access to safe and secure housing. This month alone, several lives were transformed as survivors found hope and stability through these certified programs. Learn how you can help at StopHumanTrafficking.com!
