As I shared in a previous post, from November 9 to 12, 2024, the Paris-Lyon high-speed rail line was the site of an unprecedented operation: migrating to a new signalling system, "an operation of this scale is a global first on an operational high-speed line." as noted by SNCF Réseau. The November operation was important after five years of behind-the-scenes work with no disruption to passengers. For 101 hours, traffic was halted to allow 1,000 technicians to connect new infrastructure: 57,000 wires were disconnected, reconnected, and tested. The project also included commissioning 58 new signal control posts and the new Operations Control Center in Lyon. This milestone marked a major step in increasing the line's capacity. By 2030, train frequency during peak hours is expected to rise from 13 to 16 trains per hour per direction - a 25% capacity boost - without building a new line. The key to this achievement lies in deploying the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), a unified Automatic Train Protection System used across Europe. This digital system continuously tracks train positions and speeds, optimising traffic management while maintaining high safety standards. Spanning 460 km, this line represents 20% of SNCF revenue and carries 50 million passengers annually. By 2030, the completed upgrades will handle one-third of France’s high-speed rail traffic more efficiently than ever. Video credit: SNCF Réseau
