'The Global Centre Of Rail Excellence has the potential to transform technology innovation in UK and international rail' That was the message from GCRE Chief Executive Simon Jones as the facility held its first industry demonstration day earlier this month. On 10th December GCRE showcased two projects that have come through the £7.4m ‘Innovation in Railway Construction’ competition, organised by Innovate UK and funded by the Department for Business and Trade in UK government. The competition was first launched in 2022 and since then twelve teams have been funded to take their projects to prototype stage at the GCRE site. Two teams – Furrer+Frey AG and Universal Signalling – showcased their progress to an invited audience. Six of the Universal Signalling team visited the new Global Centre for Rail Excellence (GCRE) site in Wales on Fri 6 December to fit the system demonstrator funded under a programme supported by the Department for Business and Trade and InnovateUK, to demonstrate innovations in railway construction technology. Storm Darragh delayed, but did not prevent, end-to-end system shakedown over the weekend and a demo to around 40 guests on Tuesday 10th. The demo went extremely well and has been widely reported in media. Simon Jones, Chief Executive of GCRE commented: "This is a great project. This is exactly the kind of thing that we have spent the last 7 years getting GCRE off the ground for. The difference that Universal Signalling could make to the railway is really exciting. We're looking forward to continuing to work with Universal Signalling as GCRE develops." We've had a great morning at the Global Centre Of Rail Excellence - part one of our Innovation in Railway Construction Demonstration Day. GCRE has played host to the £7.4m competition over the last couple of years and today was the first of two full days in which successful projects in the programme are demonstrating their innovations. Today it was the turn of Furrer+Frey AG. led by Noel Dolphin, telling the story of their CODES project and Universal Signalling, led by Sam Bemment, highlighting progress with their Universal Interlocking system. GCRE Head of Innovation Kelvin Davies led us off, with contributions from Ivan Youd at the Department for Business and Trade who have helped fund the competition. A recurring theme today at the ERTMS Digital signalling conference was THE SKILLS GAP. Mentioned in different guises as :- The Government’s desire to modernise skills, hitting the volume capacity of suppliers, reaching the change saturation level of operators, getting ahead of the experience curve of deployment teams. Which is why I’m delighted to be inspiring more young people to STEM careers at another Yorkshire school event next week. The rail industry also needs to promote more ground breaking modern innovation to attract young engineers to our industry, which is why I was pleased to mention Universal Signalling’s low cost signalling solution as one of the possible options for revitalising the rail industry. #universalsignalling #rail #STEM #wsp

The Global Centre Of Rail Excellence hosted Universal Signalling's Stephen Head and Sam Bemment for a site visit and survey on Friday, to begin to plan our second system demonstrator to be installed later this year. It's been said by others before, but the scale and ambition of the site has to be seen to be believed, and we're excited to see what it develops into. Big thanks to the GCRE team for looking after us, and we look forward to the installation. In a change from what we are told is the norm, it was nil winds, blue skies and blazing sun all day!
