❓ Do I need to study entrepreneurship if I already have a business idea?❓ Dr. Cherisse Hoyte, Associate Professor at Coventry University, addresses this question in her insightful article, "Am I wasting my time?" Spoiler alert: You’re not wasting your time! While some famous entrepreneurs have dropped out of formal schooling, Dr. Hoyte makes a compelling case for why studying entrepreneurship can equip you with the crucial tools to navigate the unpredictable, risk-laden path of starting and scaling a business. Whether you’re a budding entrepreneur with a brilliant idea, someone who wants to reshape industries, or solve social problems, formal entrepreneurship education goes beyond just getting a degree—it shapes the mindset that powers long-term success. Through entrepreneurship education, students gain practical skills that aren't just about business fundamentals but about things like developing resilience, mastering storytelling, and understanding the value of failure as a stepping stone to success. Hoyt's article also touches on the vital difference between entrepreneurs and business executives. It emphasises how entrepreneurs don’t just run operations—they break boundaries, challenge the status quo, and create solutions for societal change. Hoyte suggests it all comes down to mindset: the ability to embrace uncertainty, make tough decisions, and turn vision into reality. #Entrepreneurship #HigherEducation #EntrepreneurialMindset

Come Fall 2024, for the first time ever, Business Badgers will be able to major in entrepreneurship. Since 2006, Wisconsin School of Business students were able to study it only as a named option under the larger management and human resources (MHR) major. Now, students can declare entrepreneurship as a standalone major. Management and human resource management will become standalone majors as well. While this move will help “raise the profile of entrepreneurship and grow all three majors,” says Dan Olszewski, Goldberg Family Director of the Weinert Center for Entrepreneurship | Wisconsin School of Business, the real benefit is for the students. “The new entrepreneurship major is designed to be a good option for a double major,” Olszewski says. “It allows #students to combine entrepreneurship with another functional expertise such as marketing or finance. This allows students to obtain deep domain expertise in a field but also augment that with knowing they want to start a #business in the future, which makes for a really powerful combination.” Article: 'New, standalone entrepreneurship major allows for deep domain expertise' https://lnkd.in/gNykxXe3 #Wisconsin #entrepreneur #education

I get excited when my students talk about starting their own business. One of the "Well, DUH!" moments of teaching business courses at a community college has been the number of non-business students taking the courses I've taught in management and ethics. I've had students in HVAC, Nursing, and other majors enrolled in my courses and it took my synapses far too long to make the connection. Each stated their intention to start a business. Maybe not after graduation, but once they gain experience, confidence, and independence to make it as entrepreneurs. **Well, DUH!** Of course, they choose to enroll in a business class. They (rightfully) believe they need to have some formal learning on business management and successfully running a business. These are topics not otherwise covered in a skill-specific course. Given that I've been in managerial roles and director-level and above for...(checks calendar)...a long time, I encourage them in four areas. It's my way of helping them learn from my successes and my failures in my day jobs. ⭐ Improve your communication skills ⭐ Understand finance and accounting to protect yourself ⭐ Develop a sense of ethics to guide your decision-making process ⭐ Build yourself into someone who can adapt to change Each of my courses has assignments to incorporate some or all of these 4 areas, specifically communication. I'm a huge supporter of small business and it's exciting to see adult students of all ages voice their desires to run a business.

"The Hunter Centre having a more encompassing focus has happened naturally over a period of years so the name change is not an overnight decision; it’s more that we needed to reflect the changes in scope and focus for the department over many years while crucially – and this is really important – still staying true to its original founding principles." The Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship has been renamed the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship, Strategy and Innovation. In today's blog, new head of department Professor Niall MacKenzie reveals the reason for the change and his plans for the future with the Sir Tom Hunter name continuing to be a critical part of the department. https://lnkd.in/dxbvCHGz #Entrepreneurship #Strategy #Innovation #Business #BusinessGrowth #Entrepreneurs Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship, Strathclyde Business School, University of Strathclyde
