Teens have two sides to them: The side that’s still immature, impulsive, self-centered; and the side that is philosophical, open-minded, self-advocating. In conflict, we want to talk to that philosophical, broad-minded side. Be curious and ask questions like: 👉🏻“How do you think we got here?” 👉🏻“What could you improve next time?” By communicating to the less reactive side, we can come to a mature conclusion where everyone feels like they won. #teentherapist #teenmentalhealth #parentingateen #therapysession #mentalhealthmatters #parentingexpert #parentingtips

What was your first opinion of me? Be gentle. We're all told not to judge others too quickly but we all do it - and it's called thin slicing. It's a concept in psychology that refers to the ability to find patterns in events based only on "thin slices," or in other words, small amounts of information. Over time, it's enabled us to make accurate judgements about others or situations with only limited exposure—often just a few seconds or minutes - often to keep us alive! Yet that same process works when we are meeting people or in situations that don't present any risk of death! Think about how quickly you can form an opinion about someone, and usually not a good one. It might be right, but what if it's not. The way I see it is that our social wiring has evolved to keep us safe but is always needs to adapt to our ever-evolving environment. After all, evolution doesn't run at the same speed as the progress humanity has made over the past 100 years. So, by all means, listen to your gut when it flags a warning, but remember that it very well might not be positively serving you. Can you think of a time when you've had your initial perception proved wrong? #ProfessionalDevelopment #CriticalThinking #LeadershipSkills #EmotionalIntelligence #PeopleSkills #CareerGrowth #PersonalBranding #WorkplacePsychology #SelfAwareness #ProfessionalGrowth

I had to read this post for one of my school assignments, and it really spoke to me. Ontological humility is accepting that there are 3 realities at any given time - (1) mine, (2) yours, and (3) what's really happening. Our individual experiences shape our perceptions but that shouldn't mean our perceptions are the only (or most correct) ones. Making an intentional effort to understand the perspectives of others helps us learn, strengthen collaborative relationships and create synergy, which can lead to better results. As public servants, is there an opportunity to communicate with more ontological humility with the public? When there's an ongoing issue, is the right approach to communicate with empathy and recognizing that their reality is acknowledged but have conversations about the 3rd reality as it relates feasibility, funding or other practical obstacles that have to be worked through? We don't have to have the perfect answer for the public, but we do have to communicate with humility, empathy, and understanding. The pothole is real to the people who hit it every day on their way to work, so does that mean the pothole isn't real if staff hasn't seen the pothole for themselves? https://lnkd.in/gNAx6bRx

"A curious thought occurred to me while contemplating human development and consciousness - we often hear about 'correcting our past misunderstandings,' but what if that premise itself is flawed? Let's explore this mathematically: If we define our current existence state as E and our past understanding as P(R) for right or P(W) for wrong, we can express this relationship as: E ⟺ P(R)E \iff P(R)E⟺P(R) This bidirectional relationship reveals something profound: our very existence (E) is both dependent on and proof of our past understanding being right P(R), because: P(W)→¬EP(W) \rightarrow \neg EP(W)→¬E In other words, if our past understanding was truly wrong, we could not exist as we are now. This leads us to an elegant truth: if we be, then we must have been right. Our past perspectives weren't incorrect - they were the essential, valid foundations that made our present consciousness possible. Has anyone else explored this connection between existence and the inherent validity of past understanding? I'd love to hear your thoughts." #ConsciousnessTheory #HumanDevelopment #LogicalTruth #CognitiveDevelopment #ExistentialMath #DevelopmentalPsychology #ThoughtExperiment #MathematicalPhilosophy #HumanExperience #CognitiveTruth #ConsciousnessEquation #DevelopmentalTheory #MathematicalLogic #ExistentialTruth #PsychologicalFoundations
