In a Cornerstone Blog post, the CHOP Research Institute highlighted Clinical Futures' core faculty members, Michael L. O'Byrne, MD, MSCE and Halley Ruppel, PhD, RN, for their work investigating skin color bias in pulse oximetry measurements. Melanin levels may cause pulse oximeters to overestimate oxygen saturation levels in patients with darker skin as the devices function by measuring the amount of light the finger absorbs. This means that some Black and Brown patients may be sicker than pulse oximeters suggest. Learn more about how Drs. O-Byrne and Ruppel are exploring this concept to improve clinician decision-making and reduce disparities and inequities in healthcare: https://bit.ly/43wtvyY

Today Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Summer Course RDS286 'Decision Analysis in Clinical Research', we covered the definitions of evidence-based medicine, health technology assessment (HTA) and comparative effectiveness research and how to interpret ICER thresholds. HTA guides decisions in health and medicine, and therefore: 👉 compares alternative choices and assesses their added value 👉 provides explicit trade-offs between added benefits, added harms, and additional costs and other aspects 👉 addresses levels of (un)certainty #DecisionAnalysis #HealthTechnologyAssessment #HTA #RDS286
