Marine, your choice of research topic is both innovative and invaluable. It's great to see such novelty in the field! Wishing you all the best as you delve into this significant subject. Keep up the excellent work & can’t wait to know more!
𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐚𝐫𝐲𝐚𝐧, 𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐄𝐌 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞! We're thrilled to introduce Marine Markaryan, a doctoral candidate at Maastricht University whose research delves into the heart of dementia care maintaining personal relationships within couples. Marine's project, titled "𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔: 𝑴𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒚 𝒅𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒂," sheds light on a crucial aspect of dementia care that often goes unaddressed. Her supervisors, Marjolein de Vugt, Sara Laureen Bartels, Niels Hendriks, and Adam James Cavallari, provide invaluable guidance for her research journey. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞'𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐄𝐌 Prior to joining HOMEDEM, Marine's experience as a qualitative researcher in market research and her psychology studies at the University of Leuven in Belgium fueled her passion for developing practical interventions that enhance quality of life for those living with chronic health conditions. 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒆'𝒔 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 𝑭𝒐𝒄𝒖𝒔 Marine's research tackles the challenge of strengthening personal relationships in couples grappling with dementia. Her approach involves a three-stage process: 𝘔𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘙𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘕𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴: Marine will meticulously analyze existing interventions to identify gaps in addressing the quality of relationships for couples facing dementia. 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩: Through close collaboration with stakeholders, including couples affected by dementia, relationship counselors, and clinical neuroscientists, Marine will co-design or refine interventions through iterative meetings. 𝘌𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘌𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴: Using a mixed-methods approach that combines structured diaries and semi-structured interviews, Marine will assess the effectiveness of the developed interventions, capturing both quantitative and qualitative outcomes through case studies. Marine's dedication to innovation and her deep empathy for couples facing dementia make her a valuable asset to the HOMEDEM network. #HOMEDEM #dementiacare #relationships #doctoralresearch #designthinking #qualityoflife Stay tuned to learn more about Marine's research journey and the inspiring work of other HOMEDEM doctoral candidates!

This is HUGE! Knowledge, resesarch, and drug development of psychedelics is rooted in Indigenous curanderismo and shamanism. It’s time to do more than consider change. Public health and social work are disciplines (among many others) that can help facilitate implementation of Indigenous community partnerships with belonging at the heart of the work. This recent paper from Berkeley provides data to an ethical principle of Relevance identified in an Indigenous led 2022 paper, “Ethical princples of traditional Indigenous medicine to guide western psychedelic research and practice.” (Celidwen et al., 2022). As a possible solution to decrease Western colonization of Indigenous practices in psychedelic studies, the authors advocate for “formal efforts to establish Indigenous-led intellectual foundations in Western psychedelic science, therapy, and curricula.”
UC Berkeley Doctor of Public Health Student | Indigenous Science Student Fellow @ Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics
"The study found that only one psychedelic research center (0.02%) had top leadership that was Native/Indigenous while 20% to 25% of centers or public health programs/schools referenced indigeneity in their psychedelic pursuits, such as a land acknowledgment, scholarship, or research."
Researchers urge public health to find its place in the “psychedelic renaissance”

Our newly published study delves into the possible mechanisms between having adult offspring and all-cause mortality in older adults. In this paper, we examined lifestyle-related diseases as a potential mediating factor in a nationwide cohort of nearly 1 million older adults living in Denmark. We modelled a natural effect model using counterfactual scenarios to estimate the indirect effect of adult offspring through lifestyle-related diseases on mortality. Key findings: - Older adults with offspring with shorter education experienced higher mortality compared to those with offspring with long education. - Lifestyle-related diseases accounted for 15-28% of the association between offspring’s education and parental mortality. For an in-depth presentation of our results, you can read the full scientific paper in Scandinavian Journal of Public Health (SJPH) or check out our popular science paper just published in Videnskab.dk (in Danish). 🔗 SJPH: https://lnkd.in/dTsVJRdy Co-authors: Emma Neble Larsen, Jimmi Mathisen, Charlotte Nilsson, Merete Osler, Terese Sara Høj Jørgensen 🔗Videnskab.dk (Danish): https://lnkd.in/dpYtqEsR Co-authors: Emma Neble Larsen, Terese Sara Høj Jørgensen

🌍 In a milestone for health equity in NYC, the CUNY School of Medicine has been awarded a $19.3 million Foundation for the National Institutes of Health grant to establish the only Research Center in Minority Institutions (RCMI) in the northern United States, one of only two dozen RCMIs in the country. The new New York Center for Minority Health Equity and Social Justice (NYC-MHESJ) is uniquely situated to address significant health disparities in underserved communities across NYC, particularly Harlem and the South Bronx. Under the leadership of Dean Carmen Renée Green, MD, and Associate Dean Maria Lima, PhD, NYC-MHESJ will drive impactful research across three core arenas: ✅ Basic Science: Developing therapeutic strategies for end-stage kidney disease in minority populations. ✅ Behavioral Health: Empowering Chinese American adolescents and families with mental health resources. ✅ Clinical Research: Advancing Parkinson’s disease care and research participation within Latinx communities, and in collaboration with Parkinson's Foundation Announcing the largest NIH grant in CUNY’s history, @Felix Matos Rodriguez emphasized that the NYC-MHESJ aligns with the University’s mission to expand opportunity, stating, “The Center will deepen our research expertise, expand biomedical career pathways, and, most importantly, enable us to better serve our neighbors in Harlem and the Bronx.” Dean Green underscored the Center’s potential impact: “The NYC-MHESJ represents a pivotal step forward in our fight to eliminate health disparities. With this support, we are poised to drive transformative research, foster a diverse cadre of researchers, and address urgent health needs across New York City.” Learn more about this landmark grant here: https://lnkd.in/gDbCMvFP Together, we’re building a more equitable future for NYC. #HealthEquity #MinorityHealth #CUNYMedicine #NIH #RCMI #NYCMHESJ #BiomedicalResearch #HealthDisparities

Join us for the 2025 hashtag #BMBH conference at XULA NOLA during Super Bowl Week. We’ll tackle black men's brain health disparities, focusing on HealthEquity in Alzheimer's Association® disease and the underrepresentation of Black men. "The stigma of men’s mental illness has been described as having wide-reaching and profound consequences beyond the condition itself. Being on the receiving end of stigma can lead to loss of hope and self-esteem, shame, and disempowerment. Did you know? Research consistently shows that individuals with mental illness are subject to stigma and treated, or thought of, less favorably than others due to their mental health challenges."- The National Institutes of Health Admission is FREE!
