So glad to see Theo Spira's first publication out! Our study made some interesting findings about the movement of Antarctic Winter Water - a critical mass of water that distributes climate-relavant properties across the Southern Ocean. Using around 600,000 CTD hydrographic profiles collected from 2004 to 2021, the research shows that Antarctic Winter Water follows specific pathways that connect the subpolar ocean to the global ocean. These pathways are influenced by interactions between the ocean and the seafloor’s topography. This discovery helps us better understand the complex dynamics of ocean circulation and its impact on global climate patterns. https://lnkd.in/gDGrtcZH

Investigation into changes in the ice sheets: #Antarctic research 🇦🇶 In February and March of this year, four researchers and a student from #TUDresden participated in an Antarctic expedition. The research vessel Polar Star from the Alfred Wegener Institute set sail from Australia and landed at the field camp on Gaussberg in East Antarctica. Measuring stations were set up on the mountain to track changes in the ice volume and obtain accurate information about the effects of climate change. Projections of sea level rise may thus be “significant underestimates”. Relatively warm seawater can seep underneath Antarctic ice, accelerating the breaking away of chunks of ice into the ocean. That hastens melting.

On the broad shelves, e.g., in the southern Weddell Sea, it contributes to the formation of dense water, that still prevents the intrusion of warmer water onto the shelf and towards the floating ice tongue of the largest ice shelf of the world, the Filchner Ronne Ice Shelf. On a RV POLARSTERN expedition in that region in 2021 we obtained hydrographic and trace gas measurements, from which we derived variables such as basal glacial meltwater (GMW) fractions and water mass ages. The trace gases comprise the lighter noble gasses, i.e., helium (He) and neon (Ne), as well as the anthropogenic transient trace gases chlorofluorocarbon (CFC-12) and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6). From the noble gases He and Ne we derived glacial meltwater fractions, and from the transient tracers we computed water mass ages, which we like to present and discuss. OCEAN:ICE #HorizonEurope

The Academy made a submission to the Inquiry into the importance of Antarctica to Australia's national interests. https://lnkd.in/gfZpYT_j The submission recommends the Australian Government implements a comprehensive scientific agenda capable of addressing both national and global research priorities in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean. What follows is a summary of our submission: Why is Antarctica important to Australia’s national interest? In our submission to the Joint Standing Committee on the National Capital and External Territories, the Academy stressed the vital role of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean in the global climate system, and the necessity of significant and sustained funding, as well as long-term financial planning, for Antarctic research. As one of the nearest landmasses to Antarctica, Australia is directly influenced by Antarctic ecosystems and Southern Ocean weather patterns.
